Preview: Siena Saints at Iona Gaels

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Interstat) — A pivotal early Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup tips off Friday when the Siena Saints visit the Iona Gaels at Hynes Center.

Both teams enter with identical 9-4 overall records, setting the stage for a battle near the top of the league standings. The game marks the conference opener for both programs.

Siena seeks to rebound from a 60-81 loss at Indiana on Dec. 22, its second straight defeat after falling at Vermont on Dec. 17. Prior to that skid, the Saints had won five consecutive games. Forward Francis Folefac is a key figure, coming off a season-high 19-point performance against the Hoosiers. His defensive presence, with multiple blocks in three of his last four games, will be critical against Iona’s attack.

The Gaels also look to shake off a loss, having fallen 59-66 at Mount Saint Mary’s on Monday. Iona has shown resilience, notably with an 83-78 road win at Vermont on Dec. 20. Guard Denver Anglin has been a consistent scorer, averaging 10.0 points over his last six games and leading the team with 15 points in its most recent outing.

The series has been historically competitive, adding intrigue to this first of two regular-season meetings. The teams will meet again in Loudonville on Feb. 5.

Siena’s schedule shows a quick turnaround, visiting Rider on Sunday. Iona remains home, hosting Niagara next Friday.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST at Hynes Center on the Iona campus.
