Iowa State Rolls Past West Virginia to Stay Undefeated

AMES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive cohesion, the Iowa State Cyclones remained undefeated, overpowering the West Virginia Mountaineers 80-59 in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a sold-out Hilton Coliseum.

The storyline was the sustained excellence of Iowa State, which improved to 14-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12. The Cyclones, playing with the precision of a team fully aware of its potential, never trailed and methodically dismantled a West Virginia squad that fell to 9-5, 0-1.

The most important part of the game was Iowa State’s blistering first-half performance, which effectively decided the contest before halftime. The Cyclones shot a scorching 52% from the field in the opening period, including 7 of 13 from three-point range, to build a 41-28 lead. This early surge was fueled by a balanced attack that left West Virginia scrambling defensively. The Mountaineers, by contrast, managed only 28 points on 39% shooting in the half, a deficit from which they could never recover. The Cyclones’ ability to establish dominance so decisively in the first 20 minutes against a conference opponent underscored their status as a national contender and set the tone for a second half that was more a formality than a contest.

Sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic was the offensive catalyst for Iowa State, delivering a game-high 26 points. The 6-foot-8 standout from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, was lethal from beyond the arc, connecting on six three-pointers as part of his efficient 33-minute outing. His shooting stretched the West Virginia defense and created driving lanes for his teammates.

He was complemented superbly by forward Joshua Jefferson, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, showcasing his versatility as a playmaker from the forward position. Center Blake Buchanan added 14 points and four assists, while guard Tamin Lipsey chipped in 12 points and five assists. The Cyclones shared the ball effectively, tallying 21 assists on 29 made field goals, and their 13-for-25 shooting from three-point range was a decisive statistical advantage.

West Virginia was led by Chance Moore’s 17 points, but the Mountaineers struggled to find consistent offense against Iowa State’s disciplined defense. The Cyclones held West Virginia to 42.9% shooting overall and just 29.2% from three-point range. Jasper Floyd added nine points for the Mountaineers, who were also hampered by 11 turnovers, which Iowa State converted into 14 points.

The game’s tempo was controlled by Iowa State from the opening tip, won by West Virginia’s Harlan Obioha. After an early three-pointer from West Virginia’s Honor Huff tied the game, the Cyclones embarked on a 13-4 run, punctuated by Momcilovic’s first three-pointer of the night. West Virginia kept the margin in single digits for the first ten minutes, but a key sequence midway through the half saw Iowa State extend its lead. A three-pointer from Jamarion Batemon, followed by a transition dunk from Buchanan and a tip-in from Buchanan on the next possession, pushed the lead to 25-15 and forced a West Virginia timeout.

Iowa State closed the first half with authority. In the final minute, Momcilovic drained a three-pointer, and after a West Virginia miss, Buchanan finished an alley-oop dunk just before the halftime buzzer to send the Cyclones into the locker room with a 13-point lead and all momentum.

The second half saw Iowa State maintain its offensive efficiency while clamping down defensively. The Cyclones opened the period on a 9-2 run, extending their lead to 20 points within the first four minutes. West Virginia never mounted a serious challenge, as every mini-run was answered by an Iowa State three-pointer, often from Momcilovic. His final three of the night, with just over two minutes remaining, gave the Cyclones their largest lead at 78-59, putting an exclamation point on the victory.

Beyond the scoreboard, the advanced metrics painted a picture of total dominance. Iowa State scored 80 points on just 62 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 128.8. West Virginia managed only 59 points on 60 possessions, an offensive rating of 98.8. The Cyclones also won the rebounding battle 34-24 and outscored the Mountaineers 13-7 in second-chance points.

The victory extends Iowa State’s best start in years and sets up a pivotal early conference showdown at Baylor on Wednesday. The Cyclones, who entered as 16.5-point favorites and with a 93% win probability per Interstat’s ELO system, covered the spread with ease. The total score of 139 fell just under the over/under line of 140.5.

West Virginia, which has now lost two of its last three games, looks to regroup at home against Cincinnati on Tuesday. The Mountaineers will need to find more consistent scoring and defensive resilience as they navigate the gauntlet of the Big 12 schedule. For Iowa State, the march toward perfection continues, powered by a potent offense that showed no signs of cooling off in its conference opener.
