Middle Tennessee Routs Louisiana Tech in Conference USA Opener

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — Alec Oglesby scored 25 points and Tre Green added 22 as Middle Tennessee delivered a dominant performance from start to finish, routing Louisiana Tech 88-51 in a Conference USA men’s basketball game Friday night at Murphy Athletics Center.

The Blue Raiders (8-5) never trailed, opening the game with a barrage of three-pointers and stifling defense that held the Bulldogs (8-5) to a season-low in points. The 37-point margin of victory was the largest for Middle Tennessee in a conference game this season.

Oglesby, a 6-foot-5 guard from Gainesville, Florida, set the tone early, hitting three of his five three-pointers in the first seven minutes. His back-to-back threes, the second assisted by Jahvin Carter, gave Middle Tennessee a 9-3 lead it would never relinquish. Oglesby played 33 minutes, continuing a strong stretch after scoring 12 points in a loss to Houston just four days prior.

Louisiana Tech struggled to find any offensive rhythm against an active Middle Tennessee defense that forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 20 points. The Bulldogs shot just 32% from the field and were held to 22 points in a disjointed first half.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half, effectively extinguishing any faint hope of a Louisiana Tech comeback. Leading 45-33, the Blue Raiders unleashed a decisive 17-2 run over a four-minute span. Green, a 6-3 guard from Baltimore, ignited the surge with a three-pointer. Oglesby then hit consecutive threes, the second off an assist from Green, pushing the lead to 59-35. Carter capped the run with another three-pointer, forcing a Louisiana Tech timeout with the score 62-35 and 13:36 remaining.

The Bulldogs never got closer than 24 points the rest of the way. Middle Tennessee’s lead ballooned to as many as 39 points in the final minutes, allowing reserves like Marcus Whitlock, who scored all six of his points on two late three-pointers, to see extended action.

Green’s 22 points came on efficient 8-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Carter finished with nine points and four assists, while Sean Smith orchestrated the offense with six assists and added four points and a block.

Louisiana Tech was led by Scooter Williams with 12 points. DJ Dudley added 11 points, and AJ Bates contributed six points and four assists. The Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Will Allen, was held to just five points on 1-of-4 shooting.

Middle Tennessee shared the ball effectively, tallying 19 assists on 32 made field goals. The Blue Raiders also dominated inside, outscoring Louisiana Tech 34-18 in the paint and outrebounding them 45-33.

The victory was a resounding response for Middle Tennessee after its close loss to Houston, while it marked a significant step back for a Louisiana Tech team that had won four of its last five games, including a 75-63 victory over UTEP on Monday.

A crowd of 3,127 watched at the Murphy Athletics Center as both teams moved to 8-5 overall on the season. The teams will meet again in Ruston, Louisiana, on Jan. 14.

Middle Tennessee, which was a 5.5-point pregame favorite according to FanDuel Sportsbook, easily covered the spread. The total points scored, 139, went under the betting line of 131.

The Blue Raiders will look to build on the momentum when they host Sam Houston on Sunday. Louisiana Tech, meanwhile, will aim to regroup quickly as it travels to face Western Kentucky, also on Sunday.
