George Washington at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A pivotal early Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball clash awaits on New Year’s Eve as the Richmond Spiders host the George Washington Revolutionaries at the Robins Center on Wednesday.
Both teams enter with strong non-conference records, setting the stage for a competitive league opener. Richmond (10-3) looks to rebound on its home court after a surprising 77-72 home loss to Charleston Southern on Sunday. The Spiders have been led by guard AJ Lopez, who is coming off a 22-point performance in that defeat and has scored in double figures in five of his last six games.
George Washington (9-4) arrives with momentum from a dominant 97-40 victory over St. Mary’s on Dec. 22. The Revolutionaries’ engine is guard Jean Aranguren, who recorded a triple-double in that win with 13 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Aranguren has shown high-level playmaking and scoring bursts, including a 20-point outing against William & Mary on Dec. 6.
The matchup features contrasting recent trajectories. While the Revolutionaries have won three of their last four, including decisive victories over St. Mary’s and Army, the Spiders have stumbled slightly, dropping two of their last three after a 7-1 start.
Richmond will rely on its home-court advantage, where it is 7-2 this season. George Washington has proven capable on the road, with a key win at Army and a narrow loss at Florida. The battle in the backcourt between Lopez’s scoring and Aranguren’s all-around game could dictate the tempo.
This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the schools, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 24 in Washington, D.C. Wednesday’s winner will gain an early advantage in the conference standings as both programs aim for the upper tier of the Atlantic 10.
