Florida State at North Carolina

Preview: Florida State Seminoles at North Carolina Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Interstat) — The surging and sixth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels look to continue their dominant start when they host the struggling Florida State Seminoles in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup Tuesday at the Dean Smith Center.

North Carolina (12-1) has won nine straight games since its lone loss to Michigan State in late November, including an impressive 71-70 road victory at then-Ohio State on Dec. 20. The Tar Heels are coming off a 99-51 rout of East Carolina where they showcased their depth and defensive intensity.

The Tar Heels are led by standout forward Caleb Wilson, who has scored at least 20 points in five of his last six games. Wilson is coming off a 21-point, 4-block performance against ECU and recorded a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double in the win at Ohio State. His two-way versatility has been a cornerstone of North Carolina’s success.

Florida State (7-6) seeks consistency and a signature win to reverse its momentum. The Seminoles have dropped four of their last six, including double-digit losses to Georgia, Houston, Dayton and Massachusetts. Their most recent outing was an 87-63 win over Jacksonville on Dec. 22.

Guard Martin Somerville, who scored 23 points in the win over Jacksonville, is a key offensive catalyst for the Seminoles. However, Florida State has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 86.2 points in its six losses this season.

The matchup poses a significant challenge for Florida State’s defense. North Carolina ranks among the nation’s leaders in offensive efficiency and has won its home games by an average margin of 28.2 points. The Tar Heels’ balanced attack, featuring Wilson, Henri Veesaar and Seth Trimble, will test a Seminoles team looking to establish itself in ACC play.

This game opens the conference schedule for both teams. North Carolina begins a favorable stretch with five of its next seven games at home, while Florida State faces a quick turnaround before hosting Duke on Saturday.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST Tuesday. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
