UAB Dominates Inside, Routs UNC Asheville
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The UAB Blazers used a dominant defensive performance and a career-high scoring effort from KyeRon Lindsay-Martin to cruise past the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 72-47 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Sunday at Bartow Arena.
The game was never in doubt as UAB established control early and never relented, holding the Bulldogs to a season-low in points and their worst offensive performance of the year. The Blazers improved to 9-4, while UNC Asheville fell to 6-8.
The most important part of the game was UAB’s overwhelming defensive pressure from the opening tip, which created a decisive disparity in transition opportunities. The Blazers forced 12 UNC Asheville turnovers, converting them into 16 points, while committing only five turnovers themselves. More critically, UAB’s defense fueled its fast break, outscoring the Bulldogs 17-2 in transition points, a margin that encapsulated the game’s one-sided nature. This defensive intensity set the tone, allowing UAB to build a double-digit lead in the first half that Asheville never threatened.
Lindsay-Martin, a 6-foot-8 forward from Denton, Texas, was the game’s standout performer, scoring 24 points on efficient 11-of-14 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds in just 23 minutes. His output surpassed his previous two games combined and provided a consistent interior scoring threat that Asheville could not counter. He scored 10 of UAB’s final 14 points of the first half, including a tip-in at the buzzer, to give the Blazers a commanding 42-30 halftime lead.
UAB’s offense was methodical, scoring 46 points in the paint and shooting 44.4% from the field. The Blazers were balanced, with Evan Chatman adding nine points and five rebounds, and Chance Westry contributing eight points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Daniel Rivera chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.
For UNC Asheville, the offensive struggles were comprehensive. The Bulldogs shot just 35.2% from the field and a frigid 20% from 3-point range. They managed only four assists against their 12 turnovers, highlighting a stagnant offense disrupted by UAB’s active defense.
Toyaz Solomon, a 6-9 forward from Enfield, North Carolina, was a bright spot for the Bulldogs, recording a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kameron Taylor added 10 points and six rebounds, and Justin Wright scored 12 points. However, the team’s overall offensive rating of 70.9 points per 100 possessions was its lowest of the season.
UAB’s defensive effort was statistically thorough. The Blazers matched or doubled the Bulldogs in several key categories: offensive rebounds (9-4), assists (9-4), steals (9-4), and blocks (7-2 in favor of Asheville). The Blazers’ offensive rating of 106.6 reflected their more efficient and opportunistic play.
The victory gives UAB momentum heading into its American Athletic Conference schedule. The Blazers will host Wichita State on Wednesday. UNC Asheville, which has lost three of its last four, opens Big South Conference play at home against High Point on Wednesday.
