Hot-Richmond Visits Elon in Nonconference Showdown
ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — The surging Richmond Spiders, boasting one of the nation’s best early-season records, will face the Elon Phoenix in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Schar Center.
Richmond (9-1) enters on a five-game winning streak, including a 93-84 overtime victory over Southern Illinois last Saturday. The Spiders’ lone loss came by a single point at Furman on Nov. 27. Elon (6-4) has been inconsistent but is coming off an 85-79 home win over Northern Illinois.
A key matchup will feature two of the teams’ top offensive players. Richmond guard Aiden Argabright has been a catalyst, averaging 12.9 points per game. He is coming off an 18-point performance against Southern Illinois and has scored in double figures in five of his last seven contests. For Elon, guard Kacper Klaczek provides a scoring punch, highlighted by a 23-point, six-rebound effort in the Phoenix’s most recent win.
The Spiders have shown balance and efficiency. In the overtime win over Southern Illinois, Will Johnston scored 17 points and Jonathan Beagle added 14. Richmond averages 82.9 points per game and has surpassed 84 points in six of its 10 contests.
Elon will counter with its own high-powered offense, averaging 83.2 points. Beyond Klaczek, Chandler Cuthrell (21 points vs. Northern Illinois) and Randall Pettus provide additional scoring options. The Phoenix have been strong at home, winning four of five games at Schar Center this season, with the only loss a 97-88 shootout against Furman.
This game represents a final nonconference test for both squads before holiday breaks. Richmond will look to maintain its momentum before opening Atlantic 10 play in January. Elon seeks a statement win to bolster its resume before Coastal Athletic Association competition begins next month.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Richmond’s next game is at home against The Citadel on Saturday. Elon travels to face Virginia Tech on Saturday.
