Chicago State Upsets Loyola Chicago Behind Cockrill’s 22 Points
CHICAGO (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectation and a display of tenacious defense, the Chicago State Cougars secured a rare and decisive road victory, defeating the Loyola Chicago Ramblers 84 to 75 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at a sparsely attended Joseph Gentile Center.
The game’s most critical phase was its opening act. Chicago State, a significant underdog coming off a 42-point loss just eight days prior, established immediate control with a stifling defensive effort that left the favored Ramblers reeling. The Cougars forced a staggering 16 turnovers for the game, converting them into 22 points, while their own offense operated with careful precision, committing only six giveaways.
This disparity was the cornerstone of the upset. Loyola Chicago, despite holding a 20 to 11 advantage in offensive rebounds and attempting three more shots from the field, could never find an offensive rhythm against Chicago State’s active hands. The Cougars recorded 11 steals, led by the backcourt pressure of Malek Robinson and Marcus Tankersley, which disrupted the Ramblers’ flow from the outset. Loyola’s four total assists against 16 turnovers underscored an offense that was consistently out of sync.
The first half told the story. Chicago State built a 35 to 28 lead by halftime, limiting Loyola to just 28 points. The Ramblers shot a frigid 24 of 67 from the field for the game, a 35.8 percent clip, and were particularly inefficient from beyond the arc, making only 13 of 45 three-point attempts. While they relied on the long ball, Chicago State attacked the paint and capitalized at the free-throw line, making 26 of 29 attempts.
Key performances fueled the Cougars’ effort. Doyel Cockrill, a guard from Nashville, Tennessee, provided a crucial scoring punch off the bench with 22 points. CJ Ray of Four Oaks, North Carolina, added 19 points and was a force defensively with multiple steals and a blocked shot. Marcus Tankersley of Chattanooga, Tennessee, orchestrated the offense with 15 points and a game-high six assists.
Loyola Chicago was led by Xavier Amos of Chicago, who scored 18 points, and Deywilk Tavarez of Pennsauken, New Jersey, who added 17. Miles Rubin, also from Chicago, contributed 10 points and a game-high eight offensive rebounds, but the Ramblers’ interior presence was negated by their perimeter struggles and ball-handling woes.
The second half saw Loyola attempt multiple rallies, but each time Chicago State had an answer, often from the free-throw line where they shot 89.7 percent. The Cougars never relinquished the lead they built in the first half, extending it at times to as many as 14 points and weathering every Rambler push.
The victory improved Chicago State’s record to 2 wins and 9 losses, while Loyola Chicago fell to 3 and 8. The result defied both the pregame spread, which had Loyola as a 13.5-point favorite, and statistical projections that gave the Ramblers a 98 percent probability of winning. The combined score of 159 points surpassed the over/under line of 145.5.
Chicago State will look to build on this momentum as they travel to face Bowling Green on Tuesday. Loyola Chicago, meanwhile, must regroup quickly before hosting San Francisco on Wednesday in a game that will be played in San Francisco, California.
