Eastern Kentucky Holds Off Eastern Illinois for Road Win
CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a matchup of teams seeking momentum, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels used a decisive second-half surge to secure a 68-59 road victory over the Eastern Illinois Panthers in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Lantz Arena.
A crowd of 1,031 watched as the Colonels, who led by just a point at halftime, tightened their defense after the break to pull away and improve to 3-7 on the season. The Panthers, struggling to find consistent offense, fell to 2-7.
The game’s pivotal stretch came early in the second half. Leading 34-32, Eastern Kentucky unleashed a 13-2 run over a five-minute span that effectively decided the contest. The surge was fueled by defensive pressure that forced Eastern Illinois into rushed shots and turnovers, and by efficient scoring from multiple Colonels.
Juan Cranford, a guard from Dayton, Ohio, started the run with a pair of free throws. Austin Ball followed with a tip-in, and then buried a 3-pointer off an assist from MJ Williams to push the lead to nine. After a Panther miss, Montavious Myrick connected on a jumper, and Jackson Holt capped the run with another 3-pointer, giving Eastern Kentucky a commanding 47-34 advantage with 14:31 remaining.
Eastern Illinois never recovered. The Panthers clawed to within nine points on several occasions, but each time the Colonels had an answer, usually from Turner Buttry or a key play in the paint from Yvens Paul. Eastern Illinois shot poorly from the field throughout the night and could not string together enough scores to mount a serious threat down the stretch.
Buttry, a guard from Bowling Green, Kentucky, led the Colonels with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, in just 23 minutes off the bench. His back-to-back triples in the first half had helped Eastern Kentucky keep pace after a slow start, and his timely shooting in the second half helped stifle any Panther rally. Cranford also scored 14 points, while Paul, a forward from Naples, Florida, added 10 points and a key blocked shot.
For Eastern Illinois, Zion Fruster of Douglasville, Georgia, led all scorers with 16 points. Meechie White of Louisville, Kentucky, added 12 points and five assists, but also committed five turnovers as the Colonels’ defense harassed the Panther backcourt. Andre Washington of Staten Island, New York, provided a spark off the bench with 11 points.
The first half was a sloppy, back-and-forth affair featuring 15 combined turnovers. Eastern Illinois built an early 21-14 lead behind Fruster and Washington, but Eastern Kentucky closed the half on a 7-0 run, capped by a Montavious Myrick jumper with 21 seconds left, to take a 31-32 lead into the locker room.
The second half belonged entirely to the Colonels, who outscored the Panthers 37-27. Eastern Kentucky’s defense was the story, holding Eastern Illinois to just 32% shooting from the field after halftime and generating 11 turnovers which led to 15 points.
Eastern Kentucky will look to build on the win when it hosts Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. Eastern Illinois faces a tough road test, traveling to face Iowa State on Sunday.
