Michigan Dominates Rutgers in High-Scoring Big Ten Opener
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — The Michigan Wolverines delivered a dominant and efficient offensive performance, overwhelming the Rutgers Scarlet Knights from the opening tip and cruising to a decisive 101-60 victory in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Crisler Center.
The eighth-ranked Wolverines, one of 10 remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division I, improved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Scarlet Knights fell to .500 at 5-5 and 0-1 in league play.
The most important part of the game was its inception, as Michigan established immediate and total control. The Wolverines opened the contest on a 17-2 run, a stretch that encapsulated the entire evening’s narrative. Michigan’s defense was disruptive, forcing three early Rutgers turnovers, while its offense was ruthlessly effective in the paint. Morez Johnson scored six points during the burst, and the Wolverines never looked back, building a 50-25 halftime lead. Rutgers never threatened thereafter, as Michigan’s lead ballooned to as many as 43 points in the second half.
The outcome was never in doubt, driven by a staggering disparity in offensive efficiency. Michigan scored its 101 points on just 73 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 138.1. Rutgers, by contrast, managed only 60 points on 75 possessions for a rating of 79.7. The Wolverines shot a blistering 60% from the field, making 39 of 65 attempts, and connected on 13 of 29 three-pointers. Rutgers struggled mightily, shooting 35.8% overall and 26.1% from beyond the arc.
Michigan’s offensive balance was on full display, with six players scoring in double figures, led by Morez Johnson’s 22 points. The sophomore forward from Riverdale, Illinois, added a block and was a force inside, continuing a run of strong performances. Point guard Elliot Cadeau of West Orange, New Jersey, orchestrated the attack with 11 points and nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double. Yaxel Lendeborg contributed 14 points, Roddy Gayle had 11 points and six assists, and Trey McKenney and LJ Cason each added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Wolverines dominated key statistical categories, outscoring Rutgers 52-26 in the paint, 22-14 off turnovers, and 15-0 on fast breaks. Michigan also protected the rim with eight blocks and collected eight steals. Rutgers was hampered by 16 turnovers and managed only five assists on 24 made field goals.
For the Scarlet Knights, Harun Zrno of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, led the way with 13 points. Dylan Grant of Mississauga, Canada, scored 11, and Tariq Francis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, added nine points and three assists. Rutgers never found an offensive rhythm against Michigan’s relentless pressure.
The game attracted a crowd of 12,707 to Crisler Center. Michigan entered as a heavy favorite, with betting markets installing the Wolverines as 23.5-point favorites. The combined score of 161 points sailed over the over/under line of 144.5.
Michigan, which entered the game with a 94.2% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, has now won its first three games of a demanding early-season stretch by an average margin of 33.7 points following victories over San Diego State, Auburn and Gonzaga. The Wolverines will look to continue their perfect start when they host Villanova on Tuesday.
Rutgers, coming off a loss to Purdue earlier in the week, faces a quick turnaround with a road game against in-state rival Seton Hall next Saturday. The Scarlet Knights will seek to regroup after being handed their most lopsided defeat of the young season.
