LSU Overpowers New Orleans in Dominant Home Victory

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the LSU Tigers remained undefeated on the young season with a decisive 93-58 victory over the visiting New Orleans Privateers in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Monday night at a near-empty Maravich Assembly Center.

A sparse crowd of 6,505 watched as the Tigers, fueled by a dominant performance in the paint and a relentless rebounding effort, methodically dismantled the Privateers. LSU improved its record to 2-0, while New Orleans fell to 2-1.

The game was never in doubt after the opening minutes. LSU seized control early with a 12-0 run, turning a narrow 6-4 lead into an 18-4 advantage just over five minutes into the contest. The Tigers never looked back, building a 44-32 halftime lead before outscoring the Privateers 49-26 in the second half to turn the game into a rout.

The statistical story was one of stark contrasts. LSU’s offensive execution was clinical, scoring 93 points on 75 possessions for an offensive rating of 123.5. New Orleans, conversely, struggled mightily, posting an offensive rating of just 79.4 with 58 points from 73 possessions. The Tigers shot 44 percent from the floor, while the Privateers were held to a frigid 30 percent.

LSU’s dominance was most evident inside, where they outscored New Orleans 42-28 in the paint and outrebounded them on the offensive glass, 16-11. This led to a plethora of second-chance opportunities that the Privateers could not answer.

The Tigers were led by a balanced and powerful offensive attack. Michael Nwoko, a 6-foot-10 forward from Toronto, Canada, was a force off the bench, scoring a game-high 22 points in just 20 minutes of action. His efficiency was remarkable, and he consistently punished the Privateers in the lane.

He was complemented by fellow big man Jalen Reed of Jackson, Mississippi, who added 15 points, and forward Marquel Sutton from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who also chipped in 15 points. The LSU frontcourt’s collective performance overwhelmed New Orleans. Point guard Dedan Thomas of Las Vegas, Nevada, orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out eight assists to go with nine points. Pablo Tamba from Malaga, Spain, rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.

For New Orleans, the offensive struggles were team-wide. They managed only five total assists on 20 made field goals, a testament to LSU’s stifling defense and the Privateers’ inability to generate consistent ball movement. Coleton Benson of Austin, Texas, was the only Privateer to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points. Enzo Boudouma of Fribourg, Switzerland, added nine points.

The game’s opening sequence set the tone. After New Orleans’ Churchill Abass lost the opening tip to Nwoko, the Tigers’ big man immediately scored on a layup. LSU then embarked on a possession that epitomized the entire evening, grabbing three consecutive offensive rebounds before Tamba finally converted a tip-in. The early 12-0 run featured three-pointers from Sutton and established a lead the Tigers would only expand.

New Orleans showed brief flashes, cutting the deficit to 12 late in the first half, but LSU consistently answered every push. The Tigers closed the first period on a high note, with Robert Miller of Houston, Texas, throwing down a dunk at the buzzer to give LSU a 12-point cushion at the break.

Any hope of a Privateer comeback was extinguished quickly in the second half. LSU opened with a 6-0 burst, pushing the lead to 18 and forcing a New Orleans timeout just over a minute into the period. The Tigers’ lead ballooned to 30 points as the half wore on, with Nwoko and Reed continuing to score at will inside.

The victory extends LSU’s strong start under the national statistical ELO system, which had given the Tigers a 99.1 percent probability to win. They also easily covered the pregame spread of -18.5 points. The total score of 151 fell well under the over/under line of 160, largely due to New Orleans’ anemic offensive output.

LSU will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Florida International on Thursday. New Orleans, meanwhile, will aim to rebound from its first loss when it travels to face in-city rival Tulane on Friday.
