Arkansas at Michigan State
EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive struggle defined by missed perimeter shots and interior dominance, the Michigan State Spartans edged the Arkansas Razorbacks 69-66 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a sold-out Breslin Center.
A crowd of 14,797 watched as the Spartans improved to 2-0, while the Razorbacks, coming off a high-scoring opener, fell to an even 1-1.
The game was a tale of two contrasting offensive approaches. Michigan State relentlessly attacked the paint, outscoring Arkansas 46-28 inside, while largely abandoning the three-point line, making just one of 14 attempts from deep. Arkansas, conversely, struggled with its shooting touch all night, connecting on only 7 of 28 three-point attempts and 15 of 23 free throws.
Coen Carr led the Spartans with 15 points, his athleticism fueling several key baskets near the rim. Cameron Ward provided a significant spark off the bench, pouring in a game-high 18 points, many on powerful drives and dunks. Jeremy Fears Jr. orchestrated the offense with nine assists.
For Arkansas, Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas shouldered the scoring load, each finishing with 16 points. Acuff Jr. also dished out six assists. Nick Pringle anchored the defense with three blocks.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Arkansas taking a 39-36 lead into halftime behind more efficient outside shooting. The second half, however, became a war of attrition. Michigan State’s persistent inside game and superior work on the offensive glass, where they held a 16-11 advantage, gradually wore down the Razorbacks.
Arkansas had opportunities down the stretch, closing to within a single possession multiple times in the final minutes. With 43 seconds remaining and trailing 67-66, the Razorbacks forced a stop but could not convert on their ensuing possession. Jeremy Fears Jr. was then fouled on a three-point attempt and made two of three free throws with 15 seconds left to extend the Spartan lead to 69-66.
Arkansas had two final chances to tie the game, but a contested three-pointer from Meleek Thomas and a desperation heave from Trevon Brazile as time expired both missed the mark, sealing the victory for Michigan State.
The Spartans next host San Jose State on Thursday, Nov. 13. Arkansas returns to Fayetteville to face Central Arkansas on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
