Duke Routs Western Carolina in Lopsided Home Opener
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming offensive efficiency and stifling defense, the Duke Blue Devils dismantled the Western Carolina Catamounts 95 to 54 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at a packed Cameron Indoor Stadium.
From the opening tip, the mismatch was evident as the Blue Devils, ranked among the nation’s elite, systematically exploited the visiting Catamounts. The game was never in doubt, with Duke building a commanding 45 to 21 lead by halftime and continuing to pour it on after the break before an announced crowd of 9,314.
The statistical disparity painted a clear picture of the lopsided affair. Duke’s offensive execution was nearly flawless, scoring 95 points from 77 possessions for an offensive rating of 123.9. In stark contrast, Western Carolina managed just 54 points on the same number of possessions, resulting in a meager offensive rating of 69.9. The Blue Devils capitalized on nearly every Western Carolina mistake, turning 13 Catamount turnovers into 21 points, while Western Carolina could only muster 7 points off of Duke’s 10 turnovers.
The shooting percentages told the definitive story of the afternoon. Duke connected on 30 of 64 attempts from the floor, a 46.9 percent clip, while Western Carolina labored through a frigid shooting performance, making only 22 of 72 shots for 30.6 percent. The struggle was even more pronounced from beyond the arc, where the Catamounts hit just 4 of 26 three-point attempts. Duke was more effective from deep, making 10 of 32.
A significant advantage for the Blue Devils came at the free-throw line. Duke was aggressive in attacking the basket, earning 33 free-throw attempts and converting 25. Western Carolina attempted only 11 free throws, making six. Duke also dominated in transition, outscoring the Catamounts 20 to 8 on fast breaks, and controlled the interior with 40 points in the paint compared to Western Carolina’s 28.
The individual standout for Duke was freshman forward Cameron Boozer. The Miami native was dominant in his 23 minutes on the court, leading all scorers with 25 points while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. His all-around performance set the tone for the Blue Devils’ offensive onslaught.
He was complemented effectively by his twin brother, guard Cayden Boozer. Also from Miami, Cayden Boozer filled the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in 26 minutes of action. Their synergistic play was a cornerstone of Duke’s offensive flow throughout the contest.
Duke’s depth was on full display as several other players made significant contributions. Forward Nikolas Khamenia of Los Angeles provided a solid 20-minute shift, scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds. Veteran forward Maliq Brown, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound force from Culpeper, Virginia, added 10 points and four rebounds in just 17 minutes.
The Blue Devils’ backcourt was also well-represented. Caleb Foster of Harrisburg, North Carolina, contributed nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. Isaiah Evans of Fayetteville, North Carolina, chipped in seven points and six rebounds, while Darren Harris of Herndon, Virginia, added five points and three assists. The Duke bench, including Jack Scott, Ifeanyi Ufochukwu, and Cameron Sheffield, contributed valuable minutes in the decisive victory.
For Western Carolina, no individual performances were highlighted in the available information, reflecting a difficult collective afternoon against a superior opponent. The Catamounts were outmatched in nearly every facet of the game, from shooting and ball security to converting defensive stops into offensive opportunities.
The result moves Duke to a perfect 2 wins and 0 losses to start the young season, following a 75 to 60 victory over Texas earlier in the week. Western Carolina falls to 0 wins and 2 losses after opening their campaign with a 94 to 63 loss at Cincinnati.
The outcome was widely anticipated. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Duke was projected with a 99.80 percent probability to win. The Blue Devils had also been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of 34 points. While Duke covered the spread with ease, the total combined score of 149 points fell just under the over/under line of 151.5.
Duke now looks ahead to a quick turnaround, traveling to face Army on Tuesday. Western Carolina returns home for its next contest, hosting Voorhees on Thursday. The Blue Devils’ upcoming schedule remains challenging, with high-profile games against Kansas in New York and a road test at Arkansas in Chicago looming later in the month. The Catamounts will seek their first win of the season during a four-game homestand before hitting the road again in late November.
