Louisiana-Lafayette Holds Off Southeastern Louisiana for First Win

LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive struggle that came down to the final minutes, the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns held off a furious second-half rally from the Southeastern Louisiana Lions to secure a 58-52 victory Friday night before a crowd of 3,304 at the Cajundome.

The Ragin’ Cajuns, playing their home opener, evened their early season record at one win and one loss, while the Lions remained winless through their first two contests.

Louisiana-Lafayette appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable win after building a commanding 34-20 lead by halftime. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ defense stifled the Lions, holding them to a paltry first-half offensive output. However, the second half told a different story, as Southeastern Louisiana emerged from the locker room with renewed energy.

The Lions chipped away at the deficit throughout the final period, outscoring the Ragin’ Cajuns 32-24 after the break. The Louisiana-Lafayette offense, which had flowed smoothly in the first half, went cold, allowing Southeastern Louisiana to claw their way back into contention. The Lions’ surge turned a potential blowout into a tense, single-possession game in the closing minutes, but they could never quite draw even or take the lead, as the Ragin’ Cajuns made just enough plays down the stretch to seal the win.

The victory was keyed by a dominant performance from Louisiana-Lafayette’s Jaxon Olvera. The 6-foot-5 guard from Houston, Texas, was the game’s standout player, pouring in a game-high 20 points while pulling down five rebounds and dishing out two assists in 32 minutes of action. His scoring prowess provided the offensive anchor for the Ragin’ Cajuns, especially during their decisive first-half run.

Olvera received crucial support from his backcourt teammates. De’Vion Lavergne, a 6-3 guard from Melville, Louisiana, contributed seven points, six rebounds, two assists and a block in 29 minutes, providing a steady all-around presence. Jamyron Keller, a 6-3 guard from St. Matthews, South Carolina, added 13 points and three rebounds, while Dorian Finister, a 6-5 guard from New Orleans, chipped in 12 points and four rebounds. The multi-pronged scoring attack from the Ragin’ Cajuns’ guards ultimately proved too much for the Lions to overcome.

For Southeastern Louisiana, the comeback effort was led by Jalen Forrest. The 6-5 forward from Decatur, Georgia, paced the Lions with 14 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes. Jeremy Elyzee, a 6-6, 200-pound player from Hialeah, Florida, was also instrumental in the second-half push, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and a block.

Despite the loss, the Lions showed resilience on the glass. Jaiden Lawrence, a 6-4 guard from Bowling Green, Kentucky, was a force on the boards, grabbing a game-high eight rebounds to go with his eight points. Isaiah Gaines, a 6-8 presence from Pensacola, Florida, added five rebounds for a Southeastern Louisiana team that refused to go away quietly.

The game’s outcome defied the high-scoring expectations set by oddsmakers, as the combined score of 110 points fell well short of the over/under line of 141.5. The contest was characterized by tough defense and offensive struggles from both sides. The result, however, aligned with statistical projections that heavily favored the Ragin’ Cajuns, who were given a 68.40 percent probability to win by Interstat’s ELO system.

Looking ahead, Louisiana-Lafayette will prepare for a quick turnaround, hosting in-state foe Tulane on Tuesday night. The Ragin’ Cajuns then embark on a lengthy five-game road trip, with contests at McNeese State, Stanford, Santa Clara and UC Davis.

Southeastern Louisiana, still in search of its first victory, faces another tough road test Monday night at Georgia Tech. The Lions’ challenging non-conference schedule continues with a visit to Mississippi State on Nov. 15 before they finally play their home opener against William Carey on Nov. 19.
