Radford Routs West Va. Wesleyan for Second Straight Win

FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — In a dominant display of offensive firepower and depth, the Radford Highlanders remained undefeated Friday night, cruising to a 99-61 victory over non-divisional opponent West Virginia Wesleyan at the D.N. Dedmon Center.

From the opening tip, the Highlanders established control, overwhelming the Bobcats with a relentless attack that saw them build a commanding 51-27 lead by halftime. The second half offered more of the same, with Radford outscoring West Virginia Wesleyan 48-34 to secure the lopsided win in front of an announced crowd of 1,549.

The victory improved Radford’s early season record to 2-0, following their 80-75 season-opening win against Western Illinois on Monday. The loss dropped West Virginia Wesleyan to 0-1 to start their campaign.

Radford’s triumph was a collective effort, with ten different players etching their names into the scoring column. The Highlanders’ balanced assault was led by a trio of standout performers who dominated the paint and the perimeter.

Dennis Parker, a 6-foot-6 guard from Richmond, Virginia, paced the Highlanders with an efficient 15 points, adding five rebounds and three assists in his 20 minutes of action. His scoring was complemented by the playmaking of backcourt mate Jaylon Johnson. The Houston native, standing 6 feet tall, poured in 16 points and dished out a team-high-tying four assists.

The offensive engine, however, was Del Jones. The 6-foot-3 guard from Landover, Maryland, orchestrated the Highlander offense with precision, distributing eight assists while also contributing eight points.

Inside, Radford’s size and international talent proved too much for the Bobcats to handle. Frederik Erichsen, a 6-foot-9 forward from Kongens Lyngby, Denmark, posted a strong all-around line with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tyson Brown, a 6-foot-9 presence from Virginia Beach, Virginia, was a force on the glass, hauling in eight rebounds to go with 11 points, just missing a double-double.

Further bolstering the frontcourt effort was Mari Jordan, a 6-foot-8 forward from Atlanta, Georgia, who notched 11 points and six rebounds. The Highlanders’ interior defense was anchored by 6-foot-10 Gabriel Ferreira of San Jose, Brazil, who blocked two shots, and Brown, who added another.

The depth of the Radford roster was on full display throughout the contest. Contributions came from up and down the lineup, including from Louie Jordan of Leicester, United Kingdom, Bradley Land of Dallas, Texas, and Warren Keel of Lynn, Massachusetts, who all made scoring contributions off the bench.

West Virginia Wesleyan, by contrast, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against the stout Radford defense. The Bobcats managed just 27 points in the first half and could not mount a significant challenge after the break, despite a slightly improved 34-point output in the second period.

The game was never in doubt, allowing Radford coach to freely utilize his bench and experiment with rotations as the team looks ahead to a significantly more challenging stretch of its schedule.

The Highlanders now turn their attention to a pivotal early-season road test. They are scheduled to travel to Chapel Hill to face the North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday, November 11. That contest begins a demanding sequence of games that will see Radford play power conference opponents and seasoned mid-major programs.

Following the trip to North Carolina, the Highlanders will participate in a multi-team event in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, facing Wright State on Saturday, November 15, and Cleveland State the following day. A road game at South Carolina awaits on Tuesday, November 18, before returning home to host UNC Wilmington on Friday, November 21.

The remainder of November and early December features a challenging slate, including a road game at SMU on Monday, November 24, a home contest against Notre Dame on Saturday, November 29, and subsequent home games against Southern Mississippi, Saint Francis (PA) and Coppin State in December.

Friday’s emphatic win over West Virginia Wesleyan served as a final tune-up for the Highlanders, providing valuable game experience for their deep and multifaceted roster before the intensity of their schedule ramps up considerably next week.
