Quinnipiac rolls past Central Connecticut in home opener

HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, the Quinnipiac Bobcats secured a decisive 71-49 victory over the Central Connecticut Blue Devils in a non-conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at a near-capacity TD Bank Sports Center.

Amarri Monroe led all scorers with 20 points, spearheading a balanced Quinnipiac attack that saw four players reach double figures. The Bobcats, evening their record at 1-1, never trailed after the opening minutes, using a stifling defense to build a double-digit lead by halftime and never looking back.

The game was defined by Quinnipiac’s ability to capitalize on Central Connecticut’s offensive struggles. The Blue Devils, who also moved to 1-1, were plagued by poor shooting all night, converting just 18 of their 65 field goal attempts for a frigid 27.7 percent from the floor. Their woes extended beyond the arc, where they managed only 4 makes on 23 attempts.

Quinnipiac, by contrast, found a more consistent rhythm, shooting 29 for 71 from the field. While not an explosive performance, it was more than enough against a stifled Central Connecticut offense. The Bobcats also dominated key hustle categories, forcing 9 turnovers while committing only 5, and outscoring the Blue Devils 10-5 in points off those miscues.

The Bobcats established control early. After a back-and-forth opening that saw the score tied at 6-6, Quinnipiac began to methodically pull away. A 10-2 run midway through the first half, fueled by transition opportunities and second-chance points, gave the home team a lead it would not relinquish. The Bobcats took a 37-27 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Any hope of a Central Connecticut comeback was quickly extinguished in the second half. Quinnipiac opened the period on a 13-4 run, extending their lead to 19 points and effectively putting the game out of reach. The Blue Devils could not mount a significant challenge, as their shooting percentage failed to improve and the Bobcats continued to control the tempo.

Beyond Monroe’s 20-point effort, Quinnipiac received significant contributions from Jaden Zimmerman with 19 points and Grant Randall, who added 14 points and 8 rebounds. Asim Jones orchestrated the offense effectively, dishing out a game-high 5 assists. Defensively, 7-foot freshman Spence Wewe from Bristol, England, was a force in the paint, blocking 3 shots and pulling down 8 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action.

Central Connecticut was led by James Jones, who secured a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 8 points and 2 blocks. Max Frazier and Nico Ashley each added 8 points for the Blue Devils, who struggled to find any consistent offensive flow, finishing with a paltry 3 total assists as a team.

The game’s final score fell well below the pregame over/under line of 147, a testament to the defensive nature of the contest, particularly from Quinnipiac. The Bobcats held Central Connecticut to an offensive rating of just 71.4 points per 100 possessions, a stark contrast to their own rating of 102.4.

An announced crowd of 2,581 watched the Bobcats bounce back from a season-opening loss to Saint John’s, while Central Connecticut looked to regroup after a dominant win over VTSU-Johnson in its opener.

Quinnipiac now prepares for a crosstown showdown against Yale on Tuesday. Central Connecticut faces a quick turnaround with a road test at Boston College, also on Tuesday.
