Georgia Outlasts Mississippi State in High-Scoring SEC Affair
STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference shootout defined by explosive offensive runs and a relentless individual performance from Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard, the Georgia Bulldogs outlasted the Mississippi State Bulldogs 102-96 on Saturday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum.
A crowd of 6,670 witnessed a game that far exceeded its pregame expectations, with the teams combining for 198 points, shattering an over/under line set at 165.5. The victory improved Georgia’s record to 22-9 overall, while Mississippi State fell to 11-18.
The most critical phase of the contest came in the second half after Mississippi State, fueled by Hubbard’s scoring barrage, had erased a five-point halftime deficit and seized momentum. Georgia led 47-42 at the break, but the home team surged ahead early in the second period. With the score tied at 62 and just over nine minutes remaining, Georgia unleashed the decisive run.
It began with a steal by Somto Cyril, leading to a thunderous dunk off a Blue Cain assist. On the ensuing possession, Jeremiah Wilkinson drew a foul and completed a three-point play. Cain then converted a layup, and after a Mississippi State timeout, Cain drilled a three-pointer, capping a 10-0 spurt in just over two minutes that gave Georgia a 72-62 lead with 7:44 to play. Mississippi State would never recover, as Georgia’s lead never dipped below six points the rest of the way.
The game was a showcase for Hubbard, the Mississippi State guard from Madison, Mississippi. He poured in a game-high 42 points, including six three-pointers, adding five rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes. His backcourt mate, Ja’Kobi McGhee of McComb, Mississippi, provided crucial support with 20 points. Despite their efforts, Mississippi State could not contain Georgia’s balanced and efficient attack.
Georgia’s top star, forward Kanon Catchings of Brownsburg, Indiana, delivered a pivotal performance with 23 points and six rebounds in just 23 minutes. His scoring, particularly from beyond the arc, provided a consistent counterpunch to Hubbard’s outburst. Guard Marcus Millender of Houston, Texas, orchestrated the offense with 18 points and five assists, while Cain, from Knoxville, Tennessee, filled the stat sheet with 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cyril, the imposing center from Enugu, Nigeria, added 10 points, five rebounds, and two blocks, anchoring the interior.
The first half set the tone for the offensive fireworks. Mississippi State’s Hubbard was electric from the start, scoring 19 points before halftime. Georgia, however, matched the pace with a more distributed effort, led by Catchings and Wilkinson, who had 15 points. The period featured 11 lead changes and five ties, with Georgia taking its slim advantage into the locker room after a back-and-forth closing sequence.
Georgia’s offense operated at a high level throughout, shooting over 50% from the floor and from three-point range, while also converting at an 80% clip from the free-throw line. Mississippi State also shot efficiently but could not get enough defensive stops during Georgia’s game-changing second-half run.
The win continues a strong late-season push for Georgia, which has now won three of its last four games. Mississippi State, despite the loss, saw a heroic effort from Hubbard in its final home game of the season. The teams combined for a scoring total that underscored the offensive nature of the contest, with Georgia ultimately proving it had just enough firepower and defensive resolve to secure the road victory and surpass the 100-point mark.
