Kansas Overpowers Kansas State in High-Scoring Big 12 Affair
LAWRENCE, Kan. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive firepower and a decisive second-half surge, the Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Kansas State Wildcats 104-85 in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at a sold-out Allen Fieldhouse.
The Jayhawks, improving to 22-9 overall, used a blistering 58-point second half to pull away from a Wildcats team that kept pace for the opening 20 minutes. Kansas State fell to 12-19 with the loss.
The most critical phase of the contest came early in the second half, when Kansas transformed a narrow 46-33 halftime lead into an insurmountable advantage. After the Wildcats’ Nate Johnson opened the half with a three-point play to cut the deficit to 10, the Jayhawks unleashed a 15-4 run over the next four minutes. The surge was fueled by transition offense and interior dominance, with Tre White and Darryn Peterson hitting jumpers and Flory Bidunga finishing a dunk off a Peterson assist. That sequence pushed the lead to 61-40, and Kansas State never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Kansas’ offensive efficiency was staggering. The Jayhawks shot 59.2% from the field, making 42 of 71 attempts, and assisted on 25 of those baskets. They scored 48 points in the paint and converted 14 Kansas State turnovers into 14 points. Their offensive rating of 133.1 points per 100 possessions underscored a afternoon of nearly unstoppable execution.
Darryn Peterson, a sophomore guard from Canton, Ohio, led all scorers with 27 points in just 29 minutes, adding four assists. He was complemented by a balanced attack: Tre White of Dallas scored 23 points, Melvin Council of Rochester, New York, posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists, and Flory Bidunga of Kinshasa, Congo, contributed 13 points and four blocks.
Kansas State, which shot 44.8% from the field, was led by Nate Johnson’s 21 points. PJ Haggerty also scored 21, while Khamari McGriff added 17 points. The Wildcats were competitive in several categories, matching Kansas’s 14 points off turnovers and winning the fast-break points battle 17-13, but they were ultimately overwhelmed by the Jayhawks’ shooting accuracy and second-half intensity.
The Wildcats hung tough early. After Johnson scored the game’s first basket, Kansas responded with a 7-0 run. Kansas State weathered that initial push and, behind McGriff’s work inside and timely three-pointers from David Castillo and Andrej Kostic, stayed within striking distance. A late first-half flurry by Kansas, capped by Peterson’s two free throws with six seconds left, gave the Jayhawks their 13-point halftime cushion before their game-breaking run after intermission.
The game drew 15,300 fans to Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas entered as a heavy favorite according to pregame projections and covered the spread with the 19-point victory. The combined score of 189 points far exceeded the over/under line of 152.5.
The result completed a regular-season sweep for Kansas over its in-state rival, following an 86-62 win in Manhattan on Jan. 24. The Jayhawks will now look ahead to the postseason, while the Wildcats’ season concludes with the conference tournament.
