Louisiana Tech at Liberty
LYNCHBURG, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Liberty squad looks to solidify its Conference USA standing Thursday when it hosts a Louisiana Tech team seeking to salvage its season in the final stretch.
The Flames (24-5, 13-3 CUSA) enter the 7 p.m. matchup at the Vines Center having won eight of their last 10 games, including a hard-fought 81-78 road victory at Jacksonville State on Saturday. Guard Kaden Metheny keyed that win with 24 points and four assists, continuing his consistent play. He averages 17.2 points over his last five contests.
Conversely, the Bulldogs (16-13, 8-8) have lost three of their last four, including an 84-76 home loss to Florida International on Saturday. Louisiana Tech’s offense runs through guard Jaylen Fenner, who erupted for 25 points in that defeat. His production has been volatile, however, with scoring outputs of 25, 12, 2 and 8 points in his last four games.
Liberty, which sits near the top of the conference, dominated the first meeting this season, a 72-56 win in Ruston on Jan. 8. The Flames’ defense, allowing just 66.2 points per game, will aim to contain Fenner and replicate that defensive performance.
For Louisiana Tech, the game represents a critical opportunity for a signature road win to improve its seeding for the upcoming conference tournament. Beyond Fenner, the Bulldogs have relied on DJ Dudley (20 points vs. FIU) and Avery Thomas.
Liberty’s balanced attack, featuring Metheny, Colin Porter and Brett Decker, will test a Bulldogs defense that has allowed 77 points per game during its recent skid.
The Flames are 13-1 at home this season, while the Bulldogs are 4-7 in true road games.
Following this contest, Louisiana Tech visits Delaware on Saturday. Liberty will host Sam Houston the same day.
