Princeton Routs Dartmouth Behind Efficient Offense
PRINCETON, N.J. (Interstat) — A blistering first-half offensive display by Princeton proved too much for Dartmouth to overcome as the Tigers secured an 82-61 victory in Ivy League men’s basketball action Saturday night at a subdued Jadwin Gymnasium.
A crowd of 2,041 watched the home team execute with ruthless efficiency from the opening tip, building a commanding 43-28 halftime lead that the Big Green never seriously threatened. The Tigers shot a scorching 62% from the field in the opening period, including 7 of 11 from three-point range, to effectively decide the contest before the break.
The most important stretch of the game arrived midway through the first half, turning a narrow early contest into a decisive Princeton advantage. Leading 16-9, the Tigers unleashed a 13-2 run over a three-minute span that showcased their offensive firepower. The surge was fueled by the backcourt tandem of Jackson Hicke and Dalen Davis. Hicke, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Radnor, Pennsylvania, started it with a driving layup. After a Dartmouth miss, Davis, a 6-foot guard from Chicago, found Landon Clark for a three-pointer. Hicke then connected on a three of his own, assisted by Davis, and capped the run with another step-back three-pointer to push the lead to 29-11 with 9:31 remaining in the half. Dartmouth managed just a single Kareem Thomas three-pointer during that pivotal stretch, from which they would not recover.
Princeton’s offensive rating of 126.3 on 65 possessions underscored a night of superior shot-making and ball security. The Tigers finished the game shooting 52% from the field and an exceptional 61% from beyond the arc, making 11 of 18 attempts. They also converted 19 of 23 free throws. Dartmouth, by contrast, struggled mightily with its shooting, making only 32% of its field goals and 23% from three-point range. While the Big Green kept pace in possession count and won the turnover battle 10-8, they could not match Princeton’s scoring efficiency.
Hicke led all scorers with 22 points, adding two assists and two steals in 30 minutes. Davis was equally instrumental, orchestrating the offense with 20 points and a game-high six assists. Landon Clark, a 6-foot-8 forward from Bangor, Maine, provided a versatile line of 14 points and five assists, while Jacob Huggins of Oak Park, California, added 10 points.
For Dartmouth, guard Kareem Thomas of Wilmington, Delaware, shouldered the scoring load with 22 points, including three three-pointers. Brandon Mitchell-Day of St. Louis contributed 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, but the Big Green’s seven total assists highlighted their difficulties in generating consistent offense against a disciplined Princeton defense.
With the win, Princeton improved its season record to 9-19 overall. Dartmouth fell to 11-15. The result avenged a two-point road loss to the Big Green back on Jan. 19. Both teams conclude their regular seasons next Saturday, with Princeton traveling to face Yale and Dartmouth hosting Cornell.
