Preview: Detroit Titans at Oakland Golden Grizzlies

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Interstat) — Horizon League positioning and momentum will be on the line Saturday when the Oakland Golden Grizzlies host the Detroit Mercy Titans at the Athletics Center O’rena.

Oakland (16-14 overall) enters the 3 p.m. EST tipoff looking to build on a solid road win, while Detroit (14-14) aims to rebound from a midweek loss. The Golden Grizzlies defeated IUPUI 86-74 on Wednesday behind a standout performance from point guard Brody Robinson, who posted 19 points and 13 assists. Robinson has been a consistent engine for Oakland, averaging 18.4 points and 8.0 assists over his last seven games.

The Titans are coming off a 62-73 loss at Robert Morris on Wednesday, which snapped a four-game winning streak. Their fortunes often ride with dynamic guard Orlando Lovejoy. He scored 33 points in a win over Green Bay on Feb. 22 and is averaging 20.1 points over his last eight contests.

This matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 24 meeting in Detroit, which Oakland won 95-87. In that game, the Golden Grizzlies’ offense proved potent against the Titans’ defense.

Both teams have experienced uneven stretches in conference play. Oakland has won two of its last three but had lost four straight prior to that. Detroit had won five of six before the setback at Robert Morris.

A key battle will be at the point guard position between Oakland’s Robinson, a distributor and scorer, and Detroit’s Lovejoy, a high-volume shooter and primary offensive weapon. Containing Lovejoy will be a priority for an Oakland defense that allowed 73 points in its last outing.

With the Horizon League tournament approaching, Saturday’s result could impact seeding and provide a critical confidence boost for the postseason push.
