Youngstown State at Green Bay

Preview: Youngstown State Penguins at Green Bay Phoenix

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (Interstat) — A pivotal late-season Horizon League men’s basketball matchup tips off Saturday at Resch Center as the Green Bay Phoenix host the Youngstown State Penguins.

Both teams enter the Feb. 28 contest with nearly identical records and much at stake in the conference standings. Green Bay (16-13 overall) holds a slight edge over Youngstown State (15-14) in the win column, adding urgency to a game that could impact seeding for the upcoming league tournament.

The Penguins will look to replicate their performance from the teams’ first meeting this season, a thrilling 88-81 home victory on Jan. 22. Youngstown State has shown a potent offense, eclipsing 85 points in four of its last ten games, including a 106-point outburst against Cleveland State on Feb. 18. However, consistency has been an issue, as evidenced by a 65-78 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Youngstown State’s fortunes often follow the play of guard Cris Carroll. The dynamic scorer is averaging 17.6 points over his last five games, showcasing a versatile skill set. He posted a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) in a win over Northern Kentucky on Feb. 22 and dished out six assists in the high-scoring win over Cleveland State.

Green Bay seeks to defend its home court and avenge January’s loss. The Phoenix are coming off a narrow 70-74 road defeat at Detroit on Feb. 22, a game in which they led late. Guard Preston Ruedinger has been the engine for Green Bay, logging heavy minutes and stuffing the stat sheet. In the loss to Detroit, he nearly recorded a triple-double with 19 points, five rebounds and six assists. Over his last three games, Ruedinger is averaging 13.3 points and 5.7 assists.

The matchup at point guard between Carroll and Ruedinger will be critical. Both players are high-usage leaders who facilitate for their teams and can score in key moments. The team that controls the tempo and limits turnovers in this backcourt battle will likely gain a decisive advantage.

With the regular season winding down, Saturday’s contest represents more than just a single result. It’s an opportunity for either the Penguins or Phoenix to secure a valuable quality win and build momentum for the postseason push.
