Providence at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Two teams jockeying for position in the tightly packed Big East standings will meet Saturday when the Creighton Bluejays host the Providence Friars at CHI Health Center.

Both teams enter the Feb. 28 contest with nearly identical records and plenty to prove in the final stretch of the regular season. Providence (13-15, 8-9 Big East) sits just ahead of Creighton (14-15, 7-10) in the conference standings, adding significance to the matchup. The Friars won the first meeting this season, 93-88, in Providence on Jan. 16.

Providence arrives with momentum from a 94-84 home victory over Xavier on Wednesday. The Friars have won three of their last five, largely powered by the hot hand of guard Jaylin Sellers. He is averaging 22.4 points over his last seven games, including a 36-point performance against Butler and 27 in the win over Xavier.

Creighton looks to rebound from a heartbreaking 72-71 home loss to DePaul on Wednesday. The Bluejays’ season has been marked by narrow defeats, with four of their last five losses coming by four points or fewer. Forward Jasen Green has been a consistent contributor, averaging 9.1 points and 5.9 rebounds over his last eight games, and posted 13 points and four assists in the loss to DePaul.

The game will feature a contrast in recent trends. Providence has found its offensive rhythm, scoring 90 or more points in three of its last five wins. Creighton has struggled offensively at times, but showed potency in a 91-84 road win at Connecticut on Feb. 18.

With only a few games remaining before the Big East tournament, Saturday’s result could be pivotal for seeding. A win would give Providence a regular-season sweep and solidify its standing, while Creighton aims to defend its home court and draw even in the loss column.

Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST at CHI Health Center in Omaha.
