SIU Edwardsville Routs Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference Matchup

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the SIU Edwardsville Cougars secured a decisive 77-50 victory over the Eastern Illinois Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.

A crowd of 2,634 watched as the Cougars, improving to 19-12 overall, avenged an overtime loss to the Panthers from December. Eastern Illinois fell to 12-19.

The most important part of the game was the opening salvo, which set a tone of dominance from which the Panthers never recovered. SIU Edwardsville established immediate control with a blistering start, connecting on its first two three-point attempts. Darrion Baker, a 6-foot-8 junior from Chicago, opened the scoring just 28 seconds in off a feed from Jack Campion. Just over a minute later, Jo Valrie, a 6-5 freshman from Houston, drained another three-pointer to push the lead to 6-0.

Eastern Illinois, meanwhile, opened the game with three consecutive misses and a turnover, failing to score for the first three and a half minutes. The Panthers’ early offensive struggles were compounded by the Cougars’ relentless pace and shot-making. By the first media timeout with 14:57 remaining in the first half, SIU Edwardsville had built an 11-2 advantage, a gap that would only widen as the half progressed.

The Cougars’ offensive execution was nearly flawless in the first half, shooting 54 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point range. They assisted on eight of their 14 made field goals before halftime, showcasing a fluid, unselfish attack. Defensively, they forced six Eastern Illinois turnovers and blocked two shots, converting those miscues into easy transition opportunities.

Arnas Sakenis, a 6-11, 260-pound sophomore from Tinley Park, Illinois, was a central figure in the first-half surge. He scored 10 of his game-high 16 points before the break, including a pair of emphatic dunks, and added a block. His presence inside overwhelmed the Panthers, who shot a frigid 37.8 percent for the game.

The Cougars took a 35-26 lead into halftime and extinguished any hope of a Panther comeback by opening the second half on a 13-4 run. Tyler King, a 6-4 junior from St. Louis, hit a three-pointer just 54 seconds into the period, and the lead ballooned to 48-30 within four minutes. Eastern Illinois never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

SIU Edwardsville’s offensive rating of 126.4 points per 100 possessions underscored its efficiency, while Eastern Illinois managed a rating of just 92.2. The Cougars dominated the shooting categories, making 31 of 57 field goals compared to the Panthers’ 14 of 37, and outscored Eastern Illinois 36-9 from beyond the arc, hitting 12 three-pointers.

Jack Campion, a 5-10 guard from Milton, Wisconsin, orchestrated the Cougar offense masterfully, dishing out nine assists against only three turnovers in 31 minutes. He also added eight points, two steals and a block. King finished with 15 points and four assists, while Jordan Pickett, a 6-3 junior from Belleville, Illinois, provided 10 points off the bench.

For Eastern Illinois, Zion Fruster, a 6-2 sophomore from Douglasville, Georgia, led the team with 11 points. Terry McMorris, a 6-7 junior from Oklahoma City, contributed nine points, three assists and two blocks in 34 minutes. The Panthers were hampered by a season-low four total assists and were out-rebounded 34-24.

The victory solidified SIU Edwardsville’s position in the upper tier of the OVC standings heading into the conference tournament, while Eastern Illinois concluded its regular season with a third consecutive loss. The game’s total score of 127 points narrowly surpassed the over/under line of 127.5.
