Seton Hall at Connecticut
HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The Connecticut Huskies, riding high as one of the nation’s elite teams, will host the Seton Hall Pirates in a pivotal Big East Conference clash on Saturday at XL Center.
UConn (26-3, 14-2 Big East) enters with commanding momentum, having won 12 of its last 13 games. The Huskies are coming off a dominant 72-40 victory over St. John’s on Wednesday, a performance that underscored their championship pedigree. Star forward Tarris Reed has been instrumental, averaging 14.3 points over his last seven games. He posted a standout line of 20 points and six blocks in the win over the Red Storm, showcasing the two-way prowess that makes him a national player of the year candidate.
Seton Hall (19-9, 10-6) arrives looking to bolster its NCAA Tournament resume with a signature road win. The Pirates have been inconsistent lately, alternating wins and losses over their past six contests. They grinded out a 51-47 home win over Georgetown last Saturday, led by forward Najai Hines’ 12 points and five blocks. Hines has emerged as a defensive force, recording five blocks in three of his last eight games. His ability to protect the rim will be critical against UConn’s potent, NBA-sized frontcourt.
The Huskies won the first meeting this season, 69-64, in Newark on Jan. 13. To reverse that result, Seton Hall must solve UConn’s stifling defense, which leads the nation in efficiency and held St. John’s to a season-low 40 points. The Pirates’ offense, which has been held under 70 points in four of its last five games, faces its toughest test of the season.
A victory would secure at least a share of the Big East regular-season title for UConn. For Seton Hall, an upset on the road would provide a Quadrant 1 triumph that could solidify its position for an at-large tournament bid. Tip-off is set for noon EST on Saturday.
