SIU Edwardsville Pulls Away From Western Illinois in Second Half

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Interstat) — A dominant defensive performance and a commanding second-half surge propelled the SIU Edwardsville Cougars to a decisive 67-47 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at Vadalabene Center.

The game, witnessed by 1,777 fans, was never in serious doubt for the home side, which methodically extended a seven-point halftime lead into a 20-point rout. The outcome improved SIU Edwardsville’s record to 18-12 overall, while Western Illinois’s difficult season continued, falling to 5-25.

The most critical phase of the contest occurred early in the second half, when the Cougars effectively put the game out of reach. Leading 30-23 at the break, SIU Edwardsville opened the final period with a 13-4 run over the first 4:24. The burst was fueled by interior scoring and stifling defense. Tyler King, who finished with a game-high 18 points, started the half with a floating jumper, and Arnas Sakenis followed with a tip-in. After a brief Leathernecks response, King buried a 3-pointer and Sakenis converted two free throws to push the lead to 41-27. Western Illinois, plagued by offensive inefficiency all night, could not muster a counter-run, and the Cougars’ lead never dipped below double digits again.

SIU Edwardsville’s defense was the story, holding Western Illinois to a frigid 28.8% shooting from the field (15 of 52) and a dismal 43.5% (10 of 23) from the free-throw line. The Leathernecks’ offensive rating of 70.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of profound struggle. The Cougars also forced 11 turnovers and registered 11 steals, consistently disrupting any rhythm Western Illinois tried to establish.

Offensively, the Cougars were efficient, scoring 67 points on 68 possessions for a 99.0 offensive rating. They shot 49.1% from the field (27 of 55) and, while only hitting 3 of 16 from beyond the arc, they dominated inside, outscoring Western Illinois 42-20 in the paint. Beyond King’s 18, Sakenis, a 6-foot-11 junior from Tinley Park, Illinois, was a force with 14 points, four blocks, and two steals in 28 minutes. Kyle Thomas added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Western Illinois was led by Isaiah Griffin’s 13 points. Lucas Lorenzen contributed eight points, but the Leathernecks’ offense was disjointed, managing only six assists against 11 turnovers. The team’s shooting woes were comprehensive, spanning two-pointers, three-pointers, and the foul line.

The first half set the tone for the defensive struggle. Both teams started cold, with SIU Edwardsville holding a narrow 9-2 lead nearly six minutes in. Western Illinois stayed within striking distance thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Griffin, but the Cougars closed the half on a 5-0 spurt, capped by a Kyle Thomas jumper with 41 seconds left, to take a 30-23 advantage into the locker room.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for SIU Edwardsville, which also defeated Western Illinois 66-61 on Dec. 22. The Leathernecks have now lost four consecutive games and 10 of their last 11.

SIU Edwardsville will conclude its regular season at home against Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Western Illinois returns home to host Lindenwood, also on Saturday.
