Michigan State Edges Purdue in Tight Big Ten Road Contest
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Big Ten clash that lived up to its billing, the Michigan State Spartans edged the Purdue Boilermakers 76-74 on Thursday night at a raucous Mackey Arena, overcoming a significant three-point barrage from the home team with superior efficiency and a critical defensive stand in the final seconds.
The victory improved Michigan State to 23-5 overall, while Purdue dropped to 22-6. The game, played before a sellout crowd of 14,876, had significant conference implications as the regular season enters its final stretch.
The contest was a study in contrasting styles. Purdue, leveraging its home court, launched a prolific and effective attack from beyond the arc, connecting on 12 of 25 three-point attempts. Michigan State, however, countered by dominating inside, shooting 52.7% from the floor overall on 29-of-55 shooting, and by committing only four turnovers while forcing eight from Purdue. That disparity in ball security proved decisive in a tight game.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with Purdue taking a slim 39-36 lead into the break. The Boilermakers’ perimeter shooting, led by early contributions from C.J. Cox and Jack Benter, kept the Spartans at bay. Michigan State stayed close through the interior work of Carson Cooper, who scored 15 points, and timely baskets from Jeremy Fears and Kur Teng.
The second half saw multiple lead changes. Purdue’s Braden Smith, who finished with 12 points and 10 assists, orchestrated the offense and hit a crucial three-pointer with 2:50 remaining to give the Boilermakers a 70-67 advantage. Michigan State responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Jeremy Fears driving layup with 4:11 left and a Jordan Scott floating jumper at the 3:11 mark, to seize a 74-70 lead.
Purdue clawed back. A Jack Benter jump shot with 1:35 left tied the game at 74. On the ensuing possession, Michigan State ran the clock down but missed three attempts on a single trip, with Purdue’s Oscar Cluff blocking a Coen Carr shot to preserve the tie with 25 seconds left.
The most important sequence of the game followed. Purdue called timeout to set up a final play. Out of the break, Smith found Trey Kaufman-Renn near the basket, but his close-range shot in transition rattled out with eight seconds remaining. Michigan State’s Cameron Ward secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled.
Ward missed the front end of the one-and-one free throw opportunity with eight seconds on the clock, giving Purdue a final chance. Fletcher Loyer grabbed the rebound for Purdue and called timeout with three seconds left. Inbounding from the frontcourt, the Boilermakers got the ball to Smith, but his contested three-point attempt from the wing as time expired missed, and Coen Carr corralled the rebound to secure the Michigan State victory.
Beyond Cooper’s 15-point effort, Michigan State had balanced scoring. Jeremy Fears contributed 12 points and six assists, while Kur Teng added 13 points, all in the second half. Jaxon Kohler and Jordan Scott each chipped in eight points, with Scott’s late jumper proving critical.
For Purdue, Smith’s double-double led the way. Jack Benter came off the bench to score 11 points, all from beyond the arc or mid-range. Trey Kaufman-Renn posted 10 points and seven assists, and Fletcher Loyer added eight points and four assists. Purdue’s reliance on the three-pointer, while effective, was ultimately offset by Michigan State’s higher-percentage shots inside and a stark 6-to-3 advantage in assists for the Spartans.
Statistically, Michigan State’s offensive efficiency was the difference. The Spartans scored 76 points on just 61 possessions for an offensive rating of 125.4. Purdue, despite its strong shooting, managed 74 points on 62 possessions for a rating of 118.8. Michigan State also made twice as many free throws, going 12 for 16 compared to Purdue’s 6 for 9.
The win marked a significant road triumph for Michigan State, which entered as a pregame underdog. Purdue had been projected with a 65.6% probability to win and was favored by 5.5 points. The total score of 150 points went over the pregame over/under line of 139.5.
Both teams continue conference play on Sunday. Michigan State travels to face Indiana, while Purdue visits Ohio State.
