Boise State Uses Strong Second Half to Top Wyoming
BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and resilience, the Boise State Broncos used a decisive second-half surge to pull away from the Wyoming Cowboys for a 72-62 victory in a Mountain West Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Taco Bell Arena.
A crowd of 9,038 watched as the Broncos, led by a combined 38 points from Dylan Andrews and Drew Fielder, improved to 17-11 overall. Wyoming, which got 16 points from Damarion Dennis, fell to 15-13.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded early in the second half. After a tightly contested opening period that saw Boise State take a narrow 32-30 lead into the break, the Broncos emerged from the locker room with heightened intensity. They quickly established an inside-outside rhythm that Wyoming struggled to counter.
The Broncos opened the second half on a 13-4 run, transforming their two-point halftime advantage into a 45-34 lead with just over 15 minutes to play. The spurt was emblematic of Boise State’s offensive balance. It featured a driving layup from Andrews, a hook shot from the 6-foot-11 Fielder, and a three-pointer from Andrew Meadow, who finished with 10 points. This stretch created a cushion that Wyoming would spend the rest of the game trying, and failing, to erase.
Wyoming, which had shown fight throughout, managed to cut the deficit to seven points on several occasions. A three-pointer from Khaden Bennett made it 45-38, and later, a driving layup by Dennis brought the Cowboys within 56-49 with under eight minutes remaining. Each time, however, Boise State had an answer, often through the interior presence of Fielder or the timely shot-making of Andrews.
The Broncos’ ability to control the paint and capitalize on second chances proved to be a persistent theme. Fielder, a hometown product from Boise, was particularly effective, using his size to score on hook shots and putbacks while also contributing two blocks. His partner in the frontcourt, Javan Buchanan, added 17 points and was a constant threat around the rim.
Wyoming’s effort was led by Dennis, who attacked the basket consistently, and Nasir Meyer, who contributed 12 points. The Cowboys received a brief spark off the bench from Uriyah Rojas, who hit a three-pointer and dished out three assists in 15 minutes. But as a unit, Wyoming could not sustain enough offensive firepower to mount a serious comeback in the face of Boise State’s methodical execution down the stretch.
The final minutes saw Boise State salt the game away at the free-throw line, with Andrews, who led all scorers with 20 points, converting key foul shots to keep the Cowboys at arm’s length. The Broncos’ defense also tightened when it mattered, recording several blocks and steals in the closing sequence to secure the double-digit win.
This game was a reversal of fortune from the teams’ previous meeting just over a month ago on Jan. 20, when Boise State also won, but by a more lopsided 81-65 score in Laramie. This victory completed a regular-season sweep for the Broncos in the series.
With the win, Boise State continues its push up the Mountain West standings as the regular season enters its final weeks. The Broncos will travel to face Fresno State on Saturday. Wyoming, meanwhile, looks to regroup and return to the win column when it returns home to host Air Force on Saturday.
