Oakland Defeats Milwaukee in Horizon League Matchup
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive surge and a dominant individual performance, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies defeated the Milwaukee Panthers 81-70 in a Horizon League men’s basketball contest Sunday at the Athletics Center O’rena.
Oakland, improving to 15-14 overall, used a blistering 18-2 run midway through the second half to break open a tight game and secure the season sweep of Milwaukee, which fell to 11-19. The victory was powered by a career-high 23 points from junior forward Tuburu Naivalurua, who added nine rebounds and four assists in a comprehensive effort.
The game’s most critical sequence began with Oakland leading 50-48 and just over 12 minutes remaining. Over the next five minutes, the Golden Grizzlies unleashed a devastating stretch of basketball. The run featured a three-pointer and a layup from Naivalurua, a three-pointer from guard Brody Robinson, and a thunderous dunk from Warren Marshall, all facilitated by relentless defensive pressure. Oakland forced five Milwaukee turnovers during the span, converting them into easy transition opportunities. When the dust settled, the Golden Grizzlies held a commanding 68-50 lead with 6:08 to play, effectively sealing the outcome.
Milwaukee, which had battled to stay within striking distance for the first 28 minutes, could not recover from the onslaught. The Panthers were plagued by 15 turnovers, which Oakland converted into 18 points, while the Golden Grizzlies committed only seven. Oakland’s offensive efficiency was stark, scoring 81 points on just 66 possessions for an offensive rating of 121.8, compared to Milwaukee’s 96.9 rating on 72 possessions.
Naivalurua, a 6-foot-6, 239-pound native of Sydney, Australia, was the catalyst. After scoring a combined 31 points in his previous three games, he was aggressive from the outset, finishing 9 of 15 from the field. His inside scoring and playmaking provided a consistent counterpoint to Milwaukee’s offensive efforts.
The Panthers were led by Chandler Jackson’s 25 points, while Sekou Konneh posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Milwaukee point guard Esyah Pippa-White dished out 13 assists but also committed seven of his team’s turnovers. Despite a 34-point first half, the Panthers shot just 42.2% overall and 31% from three-point range.
Oakland received balanced support behind Naivalurua. Robinson, a 5-foot-11 guard from Houston, scored 20 points and handed out nine assists, orchestrating the offense. Ziare Wells added 13 points, all in the first half, helping the Golden Grizzlies build a 41-34 halftime advantage.
The Golden Grizzlies shot 51.8% from the field and an efficient 50% from beyond the arc, making 10 of 20 attempts. Their defense was equally impactful, recording 10 steals and five blocks, with Brett White contributing three of those blocks.
Milwaukee’s effort on the offensive glass, where it secured 11 rebounds, kept it in the game early. However, Oakland’s second-half run highlighted the disparity in ball security and shot-making when the game was in the balance.
The game drew an attendance of 2,686. Oakland next travels to face IU Indianapolis on Wednesday, while Milwaukee hosts Youngstown State the same night.
