Huskies Grind Out Road Win Over Wildcats in Big East Clash
BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — In a grinding, physical rematch of a classic from just four weeks prior, the Connecticut Huskies used a dominant defensive performance and timely interior scoring to secure a 73-63 victory over the Villanova Wildcats in a pivotal Big East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 20,261 at The Pavilion.
The most important part of the game unfolded not in a single explosive run, but in a sustained, second-half defensive stranglehold applied by the Huskies. After a tightly contested first half that saw Connecticut take a narrow 34-32 lead into the break, the Huskies methodically squeezed the life out of the Villanova offense over the final 20 minutes. The Wildcats, who shot just 40.7% from the field for the game, were held to 31 second-half points on 10-of-30 shooting, including a frigid 2-of-11 from three-point range.
Connecticut’s defense was anchored by its formidable frontcourt. Tarris Reed, a 6-foot-10, 265-pound sophomore from St. Louis, was a force on both ends, recording 11 points, three assists and three blocks in just 23 minutes. His presence in the paint altered countless Villanova drives, contributing to the Wildcats’ 24-of-59 shooting night. Alex Karaban, a 6-8 forward from Southborough, Massachusetts, added 12 points, two assists and two blocks, while 7-1 center Eric Reibe of Hannover, Germany, chipped in eight points and a block.
The Huskies’ offensive efficiency, despite committing 14 turnovers against Villanova’s pressure, proved decisive. Connecticut shot 54.9% from the field, leveraging its size advantage for 34 points in the paint. They scored 73 points on just 62 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 117.4, while Villanova managed only 63 points on 68 possessions, a rating of 93.1. The Huskies also out-blocked the Wildcats 8-4.
Villanova was led by Tyler Perkins with 15 points and Matthew Hodge with 13. Acaden Lewis contributed 11 points and four assists, but the Wildcats’ backcourt struggled from deep, combining to go 6-of-24 from three-point range as a team. Villanova’s eight steals and nine turnovers showed their defensive activity, but they could not overcome their own offensive struggles or Connecticut’s interior control.
Connecticut improved to 25-3 overall and solidified its position atop the Big East. Villanova, which had won five of its last six coming in, fell to 21-6. The Huskies avenged a prior result only in the sense of margin; they had defeated Villanova 75-67 in overtime in Storrs on Jan. 24.
The game lacked the dramatic back-and-forth of their first meeting. Instead, Connecticut established a small working margin early in the second half and never relinquished it. A key sequence came just after the midway point of the half. Leading 43-38, the Huskies got a driving layup from Malachi Smith, a three-pointer from Jaylin Stewart, and a layup from Reibe to cap a 7-0 spurt, pushing the lead to 50-38 with 11:05 remaining. Villanova would not get the deficit back to single digits until the final 90 seconds, when the outcome was already decided.
The victory keeps Connecticut on track for a high seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, while Villanova will look to regroup before its next conference test. The Huskies travel to face Marquette on March 7, while Villanova hosts Butler on Wednesday.
