Saint John’s Holds Off Marquette for Big East Road Win

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — In a game defined by runs and resilience, the Saint John’s Red Storm weathered a furious second-half comeback attempt by the Marquette Golden Eagles to secure a 76-70 victory in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.

The Red Storm, improving to 21-5 overall, built a nine-point halftime lead and appeared poised to run away with the contest, only to see the Golden Eagles erase the deficit entirely and briefly seize momentum. Ultimately, Saint John’s leaned on its defensive intensity and key contributions from its bench to close out the win. Marquette fell to 9-18.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded midway through the second half. After Marquette’s Nigel James, who finished with a game-high 25 points, capped a 15-4 run with a 3-pointer at the 9:22 mark, the Golden Eagles had surged ahead 59-56. It was their first lead since the opening minutes and sent a charge through the home crowd of 14,389.

Saint John’s, however, responded with immediate and decisive force. On the ensuing possession, Bryce Hopkins answered with a clutch 3-pointer to tie the game. Following a defensive stop, Hopkins then converted a traditional three-point play, drawing a foul on a layup and hitting the free throw to put the Red Storm back in front 62-59. The flurry ignited a 13-2 run over the next three minutes, a stretch that included two emphatic blocked shots by Zuby Ejiofor and a transition layup from Ian Jackson. The run restored a 69-61 advantage for Saint John’s with just over six minutes to play, and Marquette would not get closer than four points the rest of the way.

The first half belonged largely to Saint John’s, which used an early 10-0 spurt to establish control. The Red Storm shot 44.8 percent from the field before halftime and led by as many as 12 points. Hopkins, a 6-foot-7 forward from Oak Park, Illinois, was instrumental, scoring 15 of his 23 points in the opening period. Marquette stayed within striking distance thanks to 13 first-half points from Royce Parham, but the Golden Eagles struggled from deep, making just 2 of 10 3-point attempts.

Saint John’s displayed a balanced offensive attack. Alongside Hopkins’ 23 points, Oziyah Sellers provided 12 crucial points off the bench, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance from the free-throw line during the Red Storm’s key second-half run. Ejiofor, a 6-foot-9 forward from Garland, Texas, posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and his three blocked shots anchored the interior defense. Ian Jackson added eight points and three assists.

For Marquette, James carried the offensive load, adding three assists to his 25 points in 34 minutes. Parham finished with 13 points, and Chase Ross contributed nine points and four assists. The Golden Eagles won the battle in the paint, outscoring Saint John’s 38-28, but were hampered by 6-of-21 shooting from beyond the arc and an inability to sustain their momentum after taking the lead.

Defensively, Saint John’s forced 12 Marquette turnovers, converting them into 11 points, and held a slight edge in fast-break points, 18-11. The Red Storm also out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 40-35, including 11 offensive boards that led to 13 second-chance points.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Saint John’s, which defeated Marquette 92-68 in New York on Jan. 13. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Saint John’s entered the game with an 85.5 percent probability to win. The combined score of 146 points fell under the over/under line of 154.5.

Saint John’s will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Creighton on Saturday. Marquette, seeking to snap a three-game skid, travels to face Georgetown next Tuesday.
