Rutgers Routs Penn State Behind Dominant First Half

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance by Rutgers and a career-high 22 points from sophomore guard Tariq Francis propelled the Scarlet Knights to an 85-72 victory over Penn State in a Big Ten men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Bryce Jordan Center.

Rutgers, which entered the game as a four-point underdog, built a commanding 39-20 halftime lead by stifling the Nittany Lions’ offense. Penn State managed to connect on only 7 of 24 field goal attempts in the opening period, including 0 for 8 from three-point range, while committing 10 turnovers that Rutgers converted into 12 points. The Scarlet Knights’ defensive pressure, which generated seven first-half steals, held Penn State scoreless for stretches of over four and five minutes.

The most important part of the game was Rutgers’ immediate and overwhelming start, which effectively decided the contest before halftime. The Scarlet Knights scored the game’s first nine points, beginning with an Emmanuel Ogbole dunk off the opening tip just six seconds in, and never looked back. A Harun Zrno three-pointer and a Tariq Francis jumper extended the early run, forcing a Penn State timeout less than three minutes into the game with Rutgers leading 11-0. The Nittany Lions did not reach double figures until the 8:36 mark of the first half, by which time they trailed 25-10. Rutgers led by as many as 23 points in the half, completely controlling the tempo and flow of the game.

Penn State mounted a significant second-half charge, outscoring Rutgers 52-46 after the break. The Nittany Lions trimmed the deficit to 11 points on multiple occasions, fueled by Josh Reed and Kayden Mingo, who combined for 38 points. A Melih Tunca three-pointer with 12:49 remaining made it 58-47, but Rutgers consistently answered each push. Every time Penn State threatened, the Scarlet Knights responded with a key basket, often from Francis or a timely contribution from Dylan Grant or Angelino Mark.

Francis, a Pittsburgh native, was the catalyst for Rutgers, finishing with 22 points and seven assists in 32 minutes. He orchestrated the offense efficiently, shooting 7 for 13 from the field and a perfect 7 for 7 from the free-throw line. Grant added 15 points, while Mark provided a crucial spark off the bench with 12 points, all in the second half. Zrno contributed 13 points for the Scarlet Knights.

For Penn State, Reed matched Francis with 22 points, and Mingo added 16 points and six assists. The Nittany Lions shot a much-improved 19 for 23 from the field in the second half but could never overcome the disastrous start. They finished the game 3 for 17 from beyond the arc.

Rutgers (11-15, 4-10 Big Ten) won its second straight game by executing a near-flawless game plan early. The Scarlet Knights shot 56.6% from the field for the game and committed only 10 turnovers while forcing 15. They also made 20 of 23 free throws. Penn State (11-16, 3-11) lost for the sixth time in its last eight games despite the late offensive surge.

The game drew an announced crowd of 6,230. Rutgers travels to face Minnesota on Saturday. Penn State visits Nebraska on Saturday.
