Northern Colorado Bears Defeat Portland State Vikings in Big Sky Matchup
GREELEY, Colo. (Interstat) — Quinn Denker scored 23 points and orchestrated a decisive second-half surge as Northern Colorado avenged an earlier loss to Portland State with a 77-65 victory in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Butler-Hancock Athletic Center.
A crowd of 1,553 saw the Bears improve to 17-10 overall and strengthen their position in the league standings, while the Vikings fell to 17-7. Northern Colorado, which entered as a 3.5-point favorite, had lost a narrow 76-73 decision in Portland just a month prior.
The game was a defensive struggle for long stretches, defined by physical play and inefficient offense. Portland State managed just 38.2% shooting from the field and a costly 61.5% from the free-throw line. Northern Colorado was only marginally better from the floor at 42.1%, but its superior work at the foul line, where it made 21 of 27 attempts, proved to be a critical difference.
Despite the offensive woes, Portland State’s Jaylin Henderson delivered a stellar performance, keeping his team in contention with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting. The guard from Wichita, Kansas, who had averaged 22 points over his last three games, shouldered the offensive load for the Vikings.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, featuring six lead changes and neither team building more than a five-point advantage. Northern Colorado took a slim 37-34 lead into halftime, thanks in part to 10 first-half points from Denker.
The Bears began to create separation early in the second period. A 12-4 run over a five-minute span, fueled by Denker’s playmaking and interior baskets from Brock Wisne and Egan Shields, stretched the lead to 51-40. Portland State responded with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Henderson three-pointer, to close within four, but could never fully recover.
Every time the Vikings threatened, Northern Colorado had an answer, often at the free-throw line. The Bears also dominated key hustle categories, outscoring Portland State 32-24 in the paint and 12-9 off turnovers. Denker, a junior from San Jose, California, was the catalyst, finishing with 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes.
Wisne, a forward from Thornton, Colorado, recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shields added 12 points and five rebounds, while reserves Ring Nyeri and Ibu Yamazaki each contributed 10 points to provide crucial depth.
For Portland State, Henderson’s scoring was supplemented by 18 points from Terri Miller and a strong interior presence from Tre-Vaughn Minott, who grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots. The Vikings’ offense, however, stagnated for prolonged periods, managing only four assists as a team against eight turnovers.
Northern Colorado’s defensive pressure was consistent, forcing Portland State into difficult shots and limiting second chances, as the Bears held a 7-5 edge in offensive rebounds. The Vikings’ offensive rating of 92.4 points per 100 possessions paled in comparison to the Bears’ mark of 111.9, underscoring the efficiency gap.
The victory gives Northern Colorado momentum as it enters the final stretch of the conference schedule. The Bears will host Northern Arizona next Saturday. Portland State, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped, looks to rebound when it returns home to face Idaho on Thursday.
