Late Rally Lifts Eagles Past Hatters in ASUN Thriller

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its relentless back-and-forth nature and a dramatic final sequence, Florida Gulf Coast edged Stetson 78-76 in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball thriller Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.

The contest, played before a crowd of 1,508, saw 12 ties and 15 lead changes, with neither team able to build a substantial advantage. The Eagles ultimately secured the victory at the free-throw line in the closing seconds after a critical defensive stop.

The most pivotal stretch of the game unfolded in the final half-minute. With the score knotted at 75 and under 30 seconds remaining, Stetson’s Collin Kuhl, who dominated the interior all afternoon, attempted a potential go-ahead layup. Florida Gulf Coast’s Tristen Guillouette met him at the rim for a crucial block. The Eagles raced the other way, and guard Rahmir Barno converted a driving layup to put the home team ahead 77-75 with just 19 seconds left.

Stetson, without a timeout, pushed the ball upcourt. Ethan Copeland’s three-point attempt from the wing for the lead rimmed out. Florida Gulf Coast’s Isaiah Malone secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled with 4.4 seconds on the clock. Malone made the first free throw to extend the lead to three but missed the second. Copeland grabbed the rebound for Stetson, but his desperation heave from near half-court as time expired fell short, sealing the Eagles’ narrow victory.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Both teams shot nearly 50% from the field, with Stetson at 50% and Florida Gulf Coast at 48.4%. The Hatters were more effective from beyond the arc, hitting 8 of 17 attempts compared to the Eagles’ 9 of 22. Stetson also held a slight advantage at the free-throw line, making 10 of 13. However, Florida Gulf Coast’s defense made a significant impact, recording nine blocked shots and converting 16 points off 11 Stetson turnovers.

Stetson was carried by a monumental performance from forward Collin Kuhl. The junior from Holly Springs, North Carolina, scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action, dominating the paint. Ethan Copeland added 19 points for the Hatters, while Finley Sheridan contributed 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Florida Gulf Coast countered with a more balanced attack. Michael Duax led the way with 15 points and four assists. JR Konieczny posted 14 points and eight rebounds, and Rahmir Barno provided key late-game plays, finishing with eight points, four assists and two blocks. The Eagles’ interior defense was anchored by Guillouette and Malone, who combined for seven blocks.

The first half set the tone for the nail-biter, ending in a 44-44 deadlock. Both teams traded runs, with Kuhl’s early scoring burst for Stetson answered by Duax and Konieczny for the Eagles. The second half continued the pattern, featuring eight ties and seven lead changes before the decisive final minute.

With the win, Florida Gulf Coast improves to 12-15 overall. Stetson, which had won two of its last three coming in, falls to 9-18. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in DeLand on Feb. 28.

The outcome defied the pregame statistical projections, which heavily favored the Eagles at home. The combined point total of 154 also finished under the betting over/under line of 150.5.
