Cal Poly Rallies Past UC Santa Barbara in Big West Showdown
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a stunning second-half reversal, the Cal Poly Mustangs erased a nine-point halftime deficit with a dominant offensive display to defeat the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 89-79 in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a raucous Robert Mott Gymnasium.
A crowd of 2,870 watched the Mustangs, who entered the game with an 11-16 record, outscore the Gauchos 52-33 after intermission to snap a four-game losing streak in the series and avenge a 40-point loss in Santa Barbara just three weeks prior. The victory improved Cal Poly to 12-16 overall, while UC Santa Barbara, which had won five of its last six, fell to 17-10.
The game’s defining stretch came early in the second half. After trailing 46-37 at the break, Cal Poly opened the final period on a 16-4 run, seizing a 53-50 lead on a Peter Bandelj 3-pointer with 16:20 remaining. The surge was fueled by aggressive defense and efficient transition offense, areas where the Mustangs held decisive advantages. Cal Poly finished with 21 fast-break points to UC Santa Barbara’s eight and outscored the Gauchos 38-18 in the paint.
UC Santa Barbara, which shot 44.1% from the field in the first half, went cold as Cal Poly’s defensive pressure intensified. The Gauchos managed just 33 points in the second half on 10-of-31 shooting. Meanwhile, the Mustangs found their rhythm, connecting on 17 of 28 field goal attempts (60.7%) after halftime and making 21 of 26 free throws for the game.
Cal Poly’s offensive balance proved overwhelming. Bandelj, a junior from Ljubljana, Slovenia, led the way with 18 points, including two crucial 3-pointers, and added two assists and a block. He was one of five Mustangs in double figures. Hamad Mousa of Doha, Qatar, scored 17 points, grabbed seven defensive rebounds, and blocked a shot. Cayden Ward of Stockton contributed 14 points, while Guzman Vasilic of Montevideo, Uruguay, and Jess Esso Essis of Le Mans, France, added 11 and six points, respectively.
The Gauchos were led by the high-scoring duo of Aidan Mahaney and Zion Sensley, who each finished with 21 points. Colin Smith of Dallas added 17 points, three assists and a block. Despite their individual efforts, UC Santa Barbara’s offense often stalled, recording only three assists as a team against eight turnovers. Their offensive rating of 114.5 was significantly outpaced by Cal Poly’s mark of 126.5.
The first half belonged to the visitors. UC Santa Barbara used an 11-2 run midway through the period to build a double-digit lead, with Sensley and Mahaney hitting from outside. The Gauchos led by as many as 11 before settling for the nine-point halftime advantage.
Cal Poly’s response after halftime was immediate and sustained. They attacked the basket relentlessly, drawing fouls and converting at the line. A key sequence saw Mousa convert a three-point play and Bandelj hit another three to extend the lead to 68-58 with 9:10 left, forcing a UC Santa Barbara timeout. The Gauchos would get no closer than six points the rest of the way, as the Mustangs closed the game by making 11 of 14 free throws in the final 1:35.
The win marks a significant turnaround for Cal Poly, which had struggled in close conference games. For UC Santa Barbara, the loss represents a missed opportunity to solidify its standing near the top of the Big West ahead of a critical stretch of conference games. Both teams continue league play on Thursday, with Cal Poly traveling to Hawaii and UC Santa Barbara hosting Cal State Northridge.
