Hilltoppers Edge Blue Raiders in Conference USA Thriller
HADLEY, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by precision at the free-throw line and a dramatic final sequence, Teagan Moore’s clutch shooting lifted Western Kentucky to an 82-80 victory over Middle Tennessee in a tense Conference USA men’s basketball matchup Saturday night at E.A. Diddle Arena.
A crowd of 4,023 watched as the Hilltoppers, who attempted more than twice as many free throws as the Blue Raiders, secured the win by making 28 of 32 from the stripe. The final two came from Moore with three seconds remaining, breaking an 80-80 tie after he was fouled following a missed Middle Tennessee shot.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final 30 seconds. With the score tied, Middle Tennessee’s Sean Smith drove the lane but missed a layup with about 13 seconds left. Western Kentucky’s LJ Hackman secured the defensive rebound, and the Hilltoppers called timeout to set up a final play. Out of the stoppage, Moore drove hard to the basket but missed his layup attempt. However, the Blue Raiders’ Luka Jovanovic was called for a foul on the rebound attempt, sending Moore to the line for two shots. The sophomore from Dry Ridge, Kentucky, calmly sank both free throws to put Western Kentucky ahead for good.
Middle Tennessee had one final chance, but Smith’s heavily contested floating jumper from the right side as time expired missed, and Moore grabbed the defensive rebound to seal the outcome.
Moore finished with a game-high 28 points in just 25 minutes, showcasing remarkable efficiency. He was 7 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and a perfect 11 of 11 at the free-throw line. His performance was complemented by Grant Newell, who added 20 points and seven rebounds, and Hackman, who contributed 14 points, including the crucial tip-in that gave Western Kentucky an 80-78 lead with 1:38 remaining.
The Blue Raiders were led by a dynamic backcourt duo. Kamari Lands scored 20 points, while Sean Smith filled the stat sheet with 19 points, seven assists and two blocks. Torey Alston added 10 points off the bench. Middle Tennessee’s offense relied on volume, taking 19 more field goal attempts than Western Kentucky but making only seven 3-pointers on 27 tries. Their 9-of-13 performance at the free-throw line proved a decisive disadvantage.
The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout. Western Kentucky took a 42-37 lead into halftime behind 12 first-half points from Moore. The Hilltoppers maintained a slim advantage for much of the second half, but could never pull away, as Middle Tennessee consistently answered with baskets from Lands and Smith.
A key turning point came with just over six minutes left. With Western Kentucky leading 68-66, the Blue Raiders’ defense forced a shot-clock violation. On the ensuing possession, however, they themselves turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation, squandering a chance to tie or take the lead. The sequence epitomized a game where neither team could establish sustained control.
Western Kentucky improved to 14-11 overall and evened its conference record, while Middle Tennessee fell to 12-13. The Hilltoppers swept the regular-season series, having also defeated the Blue Raiders 65-60 in Murfreesboro on Jan. 31.
Statistically, the game was a study in contrasts. Middle Tennessee won the possession battle 71-70 and held advantages in offensive rebounds (11-6), steals (6-5) and blocks (4-0). Western Kentucky, however, was far more efficient with its opportunities, posting an offensive rating of 116.8 points per 100 possessions compared to Middle Tennessee’s 112.4. The Hilltoppers’ ability to draw fouls and convert at the line, where they outscored the Blue Raiders by 19 points, was the ultimate difference.
Western Kentucky next travels to face Delaware on Wednesday. Middle Tennessee looks to rebound on the road at Sam Houston the same night.
