Tennessee State Edges Southern Indiana in Tight Ohio Valley Contest

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a game defined by missed opportunities at the free throw line and a frantic final sequence, Travis Harper’s clutch free throws and a final defensive stand lifted Tennessee State to a narrow 73-71 victory over Southern Indiana in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball thriller on Thursday night at the Physical Activities Center.

The Tigers, who trailed by eight at halftime, outscored the Screaming Eagles 44-34 in the second half to escape with their fourth consecutive win and sweep the season series. The outcome hinged almost entirely on Southern Indiana’s catastrophic performance at the charity stripe, where they converted a dismal 15 of 34 attempts, leaving a staggering 19 points unclaimed.

Tennessee State, by stark contrast, was clinical from the line, making 24 of 28. That 27-point disparity in free throw efficiency proved the ultimate difference on a night where Southern Indiana otherwise held advantages in field goal percentage, points in the paint, assists, and steals.

The Screaming Eagles, fueled by a game-high 25 points from Cardell Bailey of Detroit, controlled the first half. They led 37-29 at the break, with Bailey scoring 15 before halftime. Tennessee State’s offense, meanwhile, sputtered, shooting under 40% from the field.

The second half became a grinding affair. The Tigers, led by Harper’s 22 points and 17 from Aaron Nkrumah of Worcester, Massachusetts, slowly chipped away. They took their first lead of the half with just over 14 minutes remaining on a Dante Harris jumper, setting the stage for a tense back-and-forth battle featuring eight lead changes.

With the score tied at 69 and under three minutes to play, Harper was fouled on a three-point attempt by Sheridan Sharp. The junior from Columbus, Georgia, calmly sank all three free throws to give Tennessee State a lead it would not relinquish. Bailey answered with a tough layup to pull Southern Indiana within 71-71, but Carlous Williams of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, put the Tigers back ahead with a putback layup with 16 seconds left.

Southern Indiana had two chances to tie or win in the final seconds. After a timeout, Bailey’s driving jumper in the lane was blocked by Nkrumah with seven seconds remaining. The loose ball was corralled by the Screaming Eagles, leading to a chaotic sequence. Sharp was fouled on a desperate drive with one second on the clock, sending him to the line for two shots with a chance to tie.

The Indianapolis native missed the first free throw. After a Tennessee State timeout intended to ice him, his intentional miss on the second attempt was rebounded by Tolu Samuels of Chicago, but his rushed tip-in at the buzzer missed the mark, sealing the Tigers’ victory.

Beyond the free throw line, Tennessee State won by maximizing second chances, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second-chance points. Jalen Pitre of Long Beach, California, was pivotal in that effort, contributing nine points and a game-high four offensive boards. Harris finished with 14 points for the Tigers.

For Southern Indiana, the loss was a crushing blow in a season filled with narrow defeats. Ismail Habib of Chicago added 13 points, but his 5-for-10 performance at the foul line encapsulated his team’s struggles. Samuels finished with nine points and 11 rebounds, while Sharp dished out four assists.

The victory improves Tennessee State to 17-8 overall and solidifies its position in the upper tier of the OVC. Southern Indiana falls to 5-19, with nine of its losses now coming by single digits.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final 90 seconds. With the score knotted at 69, Harper drew a foul on a three-point shot and made all three free throws under immense pressure. Southern Indiana’s ensuing possession saw Bailey score to cut the deficit to one. After Williams’ putback, Southern Indiana’s final play resulted in Nkrumah’s crucial block on Bailey. The subsequent foul on Sharp and his two missed free throws, followed by Samuels’ missed tip-in at the horn, provided a dramatic, heartbreaking conclusion for the home team and a relieved escape for the visitors.
