Preview: UC Irvine at UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal Big West Conference showdown is set for Saturday when the UC Irvine Anteaters visit the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, with both teams carrying identical 15-7 records into a packed Thunderdome.

The matchup features two of the league’s hottest teams. UC Irvine (15-7, 6-3 Big West) has won three straight, including an 87-76 overtime victory over Hawaii on Jan. 29. The Anteaters are led by forward Kyle Evans, who scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds in that win. Over his last five games, Evans is averaging 11.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.

UC Santa Barbara (15-7, 7-2) enters on a six-game winning streak, most recently defeating Cal State Fullerton 83-69 on Jan. 31. Guard CJ Shaw has been a consistent offensive force for the Gauchos, averaging 11.8 points per game during the streak and pouring in 17 points in the win over Fullerton.

The game will likely hinge on tempo and defense. Irvine’s recent success has been built on defensive pressure, holding three of its last five opponents under 70 points. Santa Barbara’s offense has been prolific during its streak, scoring 80 or more points in four of those six wins, highlighted by a 107-point outburst against Cal Poly.

This contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 28 at Irvine. With the teams currently near the top of the conference standings, Saturday’s result could have significant implications for seeding in the upcoming Big West tournament.

Irvine’s road trip continues next week at Cal Poly, while Santa Barbara visits UC Riverside on Thursday before this weekend’s marquee home clash.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Thunderdome on the campus of UC Santa Barbara.
