Aztecs Dominate Falcons in Mountain West Rout

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (Interstat) — The San Diego State Aztecs delivered a defensive clinic and turned a Mountain West Conference mismatch into a rout, overwhelming the Air Force Falcons 88-54 on Saturday night at Clune Arena.

From the opening tip, the Aztecs established a level of intensity the Falcons could not match, using relentless pressure to build a commanding 45-26 halftime lead and never looking back. The victory improved San Diego State to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while Air Force fell to 3-20 and 0-10.

The most decisive stretch of the game came midway through the first half, when San Diego State transformed a narrow 9-7 edge into a double-digit lead it would never relinquish. With just over 15 minutes remaining in the opening period and leading by only two points, the Aztecs ignited a 14-0 run over the next four minutes that showcased their overwhelming defensive prowess and offensive efficiency.

The run began with a powerful dunk from Pharaoh Compton, assisted by Miles Byrd, and was fueled almost entirely by Air Force mistakes. The Falcons committed four turnovers during the stretch, including two shot-clock violations, as the Aztec defense smothered every passing lane and driving attempt. San Diego State capitalized swiftly, with BJ Davis hitting a jumper and later drilling a three-pointer off a Sean Newman assist. The run was capped by a Tae Simmons layup, pushing the lead to 23-7 and effectively breaking the game open. Air Force went scoreless for over five minutes of game time, a drought from which they never recovered.

San Diego State’s dominance was comprehensive. The Aztecs shot a blistering 60% from the field, scoring 52 points in the paint. Defensively, they were even more impressive, forcing 20 Air Force turnovers and converting them into 32 points. The Aztecs also recorded 14 steals and seven blocks, disrupting the Falcons’ offensive sets from start to finish. Air Force managed an offensive rating of just 76.4 points per 100 possessions, a testament to the Aztecs’ stifling defense.

BJ Davis led a balanced San Diego State attack with 16 points. Miles Heide provided a strong interior presence with 13 points, while Pharaoh Compton added 11 points and two blocks. Reese Dixon-Waters and Jeremiah Oden each chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Aztecs shared the ball effectively, tallying 14 assists.

Air Force, struggling through a difficult season, was led by Kam Sanders’ 11 points. Ethan Greenberg also scored 11, and Wesley Celichowski contributed six points and five assists. The Falcons shot 39.6% from the field and were outrebounded by the more physical Aztec squad.

The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 17, which San Diego State won 81-58. This performance was even more commanding, underscoring the Aztecs’ position in the upper tier of the Mountain West and the Falcons’ ongoing challenges.

San Diego State will look to carry this momentum into a key conference homestand, beginning with a matchup against Nevada on Feb. 14. Air Force, still searching for its first league win, will host Colorado State on Tuesday.
