Oregon at Purdue

Preview: Struggling Oregon Faces Tall Task at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — A surging Purdue squad will look to capitalize on a favorable home matchup when it hosts reeling Oregon in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Mackey Arena.

The eighth-ranked Boilermakers (18-4) enter riding high after a dominant 93-63 road victory over Maryland last Sunday. In that game, guard Fletcher Loyer erupted for a season-high 29 points, highlighting the offensive firepower that has made Purdue a national contender. Loyer is averaging 18.4 points over his last five games.

Conversely, the Ducks (8-14) are mired in a seven-game losing streak, their most recent a 84-66 home loss to Iowa on Feb. 1. During the skid, Oregon has struggled offensively, failing to reach 70 points in five of those contests.

The matchup pits Oregon’s top scorer, Kwame Evans, against Purdue’s stout defense. Evans has been a bright spot, averaging 17.5 points over his last six games, including a 24-point effort against UCLA on Jan. 28. However, the Ducks have provided him little support, losing those six games by an average of 18.2 points.

Purdue’s balance presents a major challenge. Alongside Loyer, backcourt partner Braden Smith is coming off a 19-point, six-assist performance against Maryland, and forward Trey Kaufman-Renn provides a physical interior presence, posting a double-double in the same game.

History and environment also favor the Boilermakers. Purdue is 11-1 at home this season, while Oregon is 1-7 in true road games. The Ducks have not won since a Jan. 2 victory at Maryland.

For Oregon to snap its streak, it must find consistent secondary scoring behind Evans and significantly improve its perimeter defense against Purdue’s efficient backcourt. The Boilermakers aim to avoid a letdown before a pivotal stretch of Big Ten games next week.

Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EST tipoff and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
