Skyhawks Dominate Screaming Eagles Behind Balanced Scoring
MARTIN, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, showcasing the depth and efficiency that has defined their standout season, methodically dispatched the struggling Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 76-54 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at Skyhawk Arena.
From the opening tip, the Skyhawks (19-5, 11-2 OVC) imposed their will, building a double-digit lead in the first half and maintaining complete control throughout the second to sweep the season series. The Screaming Eagles (5-17, 3-10), mired in a difficult campaign, could not find any sustained offensive rhythm against a disciplined Tennessee-Martin defense.
The most pivotal stretch of the game arrived early, setting a tone of defensive dominance from which Southern Indiana never recovered. After a competitive opening few minutes, the Skyhawks unleashed a 17-2 run midway through the first half that effectively decided the contest. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced the Screaming Eagles into a series of rushed and contested shots, coupled with a sudden offensive outburst from the Skyhawks’ international contingent.
Lithuanian forward Matas Deniusas ignited the run with a 3-pointer, and Serbian guard Filip Radaković quickly added a layup. Deniusas then struck again from beyond the arc, pushing the lead to 11-3. The Screaming Eagles’ offensive woes were encapsulated during this span by multiple blocked shots, including a rejection by Portugal’s Pedro Santos on a Steven Clay driving attempt. When Deniusas capped the decisive run with a powerful dunk off a feed from Slovenia’s Filip Petkovski, the Skyhawks led 31-15, and the outcome was scarcely in doubt thereafter.
Tennessee-Martin’s victory was a model of efficiency and balance. The Skyhawks shot 45.2% from the field and 37.9% from 3-point range, while holding Southern Indiana to a frigid 28.1% overall. The Skyhawks dominated the interior, outscoring the Screaming Eagles 32-14 in the paint and winning the battle on the glass with 20 offensive rebounds leading to numerous second-chance opportunities. Their transition game was also sharp, generating 26 fast-break points.
Santos, coming off the bench, led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting in just 20 minutes, adding a block and a steal. Deniusas provided 15 points and seven rebounds, while Radaković orchestrated the offense with 11 points and four assists. Petkovski filled the stat sheet with nine points, four assists and three blocks.
Southern Indiana was led by Amaree Brown’s 14 points, but he needed 15 shots to get there. Ismail Habib added eight points. The Screaming Eagles’ offensive rating of 86.5 on 62 possessions underscored a night of profound struggle against a superior defensive unit.
A crowd of 1,240 watched as the Skyhawks never allowed their lead to dip below 12 in the second half, consistently answering any modest Southern Indiana push with a basket of their own. The victory solidifies Tennessee-Martin’s position near the top of the OVC standings as they continue to pursue a conference title. For Southern Indiana, the loss extends a trying season, highlighting the gap they must close against the league’s elite.
Tennessee-Martin will look to continue its momentum at home against Morehead State on Saturday. Southern Indiana travels to face Southeast Missouri State the same day.
