Iowa State Routs Kansas State in Big 12 Road Win

MANHATTAN, Kan. (Interstat) — The Iowa State Cyclones delivered a commanding wire-to-wire performance, dismantling the Kansas State Wildcats 95-61 in a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at Bramlage Coliseum.

Fueled by a suffocating first-half defensive effort and a blistering offensive display, the Cyclones improved to 20-2 overall and solidified their standing atop the conference. Kansas State fell to 10-12.

The defining stretch of the contest arrived immediately after the opening tip. Iowa State established its dominance with a devastating 29-2 run over the first 12 minutes, transforming a competitive start into a lopsided affair. The Cyclones’ defense was the catalyst, forcing eight Kansas State turnovers in the first eight minutes and converting them into easy transition opportunities.

Tamin Lipsey, Iowa State’s floor general from Ames, Iowa, was instrumental in the early onslaught. He scored six points and recorded two steals during the pivotal run, consistently disrupting Kansas State’s offense and pushing the pace. His backcourt pressure set a tone the Wildcats never countered.

By the time the first media timeout arrived with 15:51 remaining in the half, Iowa State led 11-4. The break did nothing to stem the tide. The Cyclones continued their assault, with Joshua Jefferson of Las Vegas hitting a 3-pointer and Milan Momcilovic of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, adding another, stretching the lead to 17-4 and forcing a full Kansas State timeout just over four minutes into the game.

The Wildcats’ offense was paralyzed, managing only two Dorin Buca baskets in the first seven minutes. Meanwhile, Iowa State’s ball movement and shooting were precise. The Cyclones connected on 7 of their first 12 3-point attempts in the half, with Nate Heise of Lake City, Minnesota, draining two during the run. When Jefferson threw down a dunk off a feed from Killyan Toure of Pamiers, France, to make it 29-6, the outcome was effectively decided.

Iowa State took a 50-21 lead into halftime, having shot 55% from the field and 52% from 3-point range while holding Kansas State to 29% shooting. The Cyclones scored 21 points off 10 first-half Wildcat turnovers.

Kansas State showed more fight after halftime, outscoring Iowa State 40-45 in the second period behind a game-high 23 points from PJ Haggerty of Crosby, Texas. The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 24 on several occasions, but never mounted a serious threat. Every Kansas State push was met with an Iowa State response, often a 3-pointer from Momcilovic or a driving score from Lipsey or Jefferson.

Iowa State’s offensive efficiency was staggering. The Cyclones finished the game shooting 55% from the field and an even more impressive 51.9% from beyond the arc, making 14 of 27 attempts. They assisted on eight of their 33 made field goals and committed only 12 turnovers. Defensively, they held Kansas State to an offensive rating of 83.7 points per 100 possessions.

Lipsey finished with 16 points and nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double, while controlling the game’s tempo throughout his 32 minutes. Jefferson added 19 points and eight rebounds. Momcilovic contributed 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Heise chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

For Kansas State, Haggerty’s 23 points and nine rebounds were a bright spot. Nate Johnson of Liberty Township, Ohio, added eight points and five assists, but the Wildcats were undone by 14 turnovers and an inability to contain Iowa State’s multifaceted offense.

A crowd of 8,031 watched as Iowa State covered the pregame spread of -10.5 with ease. The total score of 156 points fell just under the over/under line of 155.5.

Iowa State next hosts Baylor on Saturday. Kansas State travels to face Texas Christian, also on Saturday.
