Montana at Sacramento State

Hot-Shooting Montana Visits Sacramento State in Big Sky Clash

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Montana men’s basketball team looks to continue its climb in the Big Sky Conference standings when it visits struggling Sacramento State on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, at Colberg Court.

The Grizzlies (13-9) have won five of their last six games, including a 64-60 road victory at Portland State on Thursday. Guard Money Williams, the team’s dynamic scorer, led the way with 24 points in that win. Over his last nine games, Williams is averaging 22.2 points and 4.7 assists, including a 35-point outburst at Idaho on Jan. 8.

Montana’s recent success contrasts sharply with the season-long difficulties of Sacramento State (7-13). The Hornets, however, are coming off an 83-80 home win over Montana State on Thursday, fueled by a season-high 27 points and six assists from guard Prophet Johnson. Johnson has been a bright spot, averaging 19.1 points over his last seven contests.

The matchup features two of the conference’s premier offensive guards in Williams and Johnson. Montana has found its rhythm, averaging 78.4 points during its 5-1 stretch. Sacramento State’s defense, which allows a conference-worst 84.2 points per game, will be severely tested.

The Hornets have struggled at home, posting a 4-6 record at Colberg Court this season. Montana, which has won three straight road games in conference play, will look to exploit that vulnerability.

Saturday’s game is the first of a regular-season series split; the teams will meet again in Missoula on Feb. 26. For Sacramento State, the contest represents a chance to build momentum after a rare win. For Montana, it is an opportunity to solidify its position in the upper tier of the Big Sky against a team it is expected to beat.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST.
