Matadors Dominate Tritons in Big West Matchup
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a game defined by contrasting offensive philosophies, Cal State Northridge used a dominant interior performance and superior efficiency to pull away from UC San Diego for an 81-64 victory in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at the Matadome.
The Matadors, avenging a loss from earlier in the season, improved to 13-10 overall and leveled their conference record. The Tritons, who entered as statistical favorites, saw a two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-8.
The most pivotal stretch of the game came not in a frantic final minute, but in a decisive first-half run that established the night’s narrative. After UC San Diego’s Alex Chaikin opened the scoring with a three-pointer, Cal State Northridge responded with a 13-0 surge over the next three minutes, a run powered entirely by physical play in the paint and at the free-throw line. Mahmoud Fofana, the Matadors’ 6-foot-6 forward from San Jose, California, ignited the run with a tip-in, a drawn foul, and a subsequent free throw. Larry Hughes of St. Louis, Missouri, capped it with a three-pointer, assisted by Fofana, to give Northridge a 13-3 lead it would never relinquish.
This early sequence highlighted the fundamental disparity that decided the contest. Cal State Northridge consistently attacked the basket, drawing fouls and converting second-chance opportunities, while UC San Diego struggled with offensive rhythm and finishing. The Matadors finished the game with a commanding 42-32 advantage in points in the paint and a crucial 18-of-23 performance from the free-throw line. The Tritons, by contrast, shot a frigid 8 of 18 from the charity stripe.
Fofana was the central figure in Northridge’s offensive scheme, scoring a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and adding six rebounds in just 29 minutes. His ability to finish through contact and capitalize on offensive boards, of which Northridge had eight as a team, provided a steadying force. He was complemented superbly by point guard Josiah Davis of Kitchener, Canada, who orchestrated the offense with a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists against only two turnovers.
UC San Diego, despite forcing 15 turnovers and collecting 12 steals, could not overcome its own offensive woes. The Tritons shot just 34.3% from the field (24 of 70) and 28.6% from three-point range (8 of 28). Their offensive rating of 84.7 points per 100 possessions paled in comparison to Northridge’s efficient 101.3. Hudson Mayes of Los Angeles led the Tritons with 11 points and five assists, while Leo Beath of Malibu, California, added 10 points. Bol Dengdit, the 6-foot-11 center from Melbourne, Australia, provided a defensive presence with nine points, two blocks, and two steals, but the team’s collective shooting slump proved insurmountable.
The Tritons trimmed the deficit to single digits several times in the second half, closing to within 45-38 on a Cade Pendleton transition jumper with 16:34 remaining. However, the Matadors consistently answered each push. A Larry Hughes three-pointer, followed by a pair of Josiah Davis free throws, promptly pushed the lead back to 12. Every time UC San Diego threatened, Northridge responded with a basket in the lane or a trip to the foul line, methodically extending the lead to as many as 19 points in the final minutes.
Cal State Northridge’s ball security, with only three total assists, was uncharacteristically poor, but it was offset by its ability to score directly off drives and offensive rebounds. The Matadors also benefited from balanced scoring, with Jai Chisolm of Summerville, South Carolina, Larry Hughes, and Jordan Brinson of Inglewood, California, each adding 11 points.
The win gives Cal State Northridge a season split with UC San Diego after the Tritons won the first meeting 79-84 in La Jolla on Jan. 15. For UC San Diego, the loss continues a pattern of road struggles within the conference and underscores an ongoing challenge to find consistent scoring beyond sporadic defensive pressure.
Both teams continue Big West play next week. Cal State Northridge travels to face Cal Poly on Thursday, while UC San Diego returns home to host Long Beach State.
