Skyhawks Dominate Leathernecks in Conference Road Victory

MACOMB, Ill. (Interstat) — In a display of defensive dominance and offensive efficiency rarely seen this season, the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks dismantled the Western Illinois Leathernecks 84-44 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Western Hall.

The Skyhawks (17-5, 8-1 OVC) held the Leathernecks to a staggering 26.5% shooting from the field, forced 14 turnovers, and blocked six shots, turning a conference road game into a lopsided affair witnessed by 568 fans. Western Illinois (4-19, 1-8) managed just 13 field goals the entire game and never threatened after the opening minutes.

The most important part of the game was the opening 15 minutes of the first half, where Tennessee-Martin established a stranglehold on the contest that would never loosen. After Western Illinois’ Makai Kvamme opened the scoring with a layup, the Skyhawks unleashed a 23-2 run over the next nine minutes that effectively decided the outcome. The burst was fueled by relentless defensive pressure, which generated six steals and four blocks in the first half alone, and an inside attack that would finish with a 40-14 advantage in points in the paint.

Tennessee-Martin’s international-laden roster showcased its depth and cohesion. Junior forward Filip Petkovski of Slovenia led all scorers with 17 points and added eight rebounds. Serbian guard Andrija Bukumirović contributed 12 points and three assists, while Lithuanian big man Matas Deniusas, the team’s top star, filled the stat sheet with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists in just 20 minutes of work. The Skyhawks’ ball movement was crisp, resulting in 13 assists on 31 made baskets, a stark contrast to Western Illinois’ four total assists.

The Leathernecks, who have lost eight of their last nine, were plagued by cold shooting from the start. They missed 15 of their first 17 field goal attempts and finished 6 of 24 from three-point range. Danny Stephens led Western Illinois with six points and five rebounds. The team’s offensive rating of 67.1 points per 100 possessions underscored a afternoon of profound struggle against a swarming Skyhawk defense.

Tennessee-Martin led 38-20 at halftime and only increased its intensity after the break, opening the second half on a 15-4 run to push the lead to 29 points. The Skyhawks’ offensive rating of 137.5 was a model of efficiency, as they scored 84 points on just 61 possessions. They also capitalized on Western Illinois’ mistakes, scoring 26 points off turnovers and adding 19 fastbreak points.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Tennessee-Martin, which defeated Western Illinois 67-60 at home on Jan. 1. The Skyhawks have now won three straight games and seven of their last eight as they continue to sit near the top of the OVC standings. Western Illinois, meanwhile, sees its losing streak extend to three games.

Tennessee-Martin will look to carry this momentum into a key homestand next week, hosting Southern Indiana on Thursday and Morehead State on Saturday. Western Illinois hits the road for its next two contests, facing Tennessee Tech on Thursday and Tennessee State on Saturday.
