Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee
Preview: Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt slides in Conference USA play will meet Saturday when the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers visit the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at Murphy Athletics Center.
Both teams enter the Jan. 31 matchup on losing streaks. Western Kentucky (11-10) has dropped four consecutive games, most recently a 72-69 loss at Kennesaw State on Wednesday. Middle Tennessee (11-9) has lost two straight, including an 81-65 home defeat to Liberty on Thursday.
The Hilltoppers will lean on forward Grant Newell, who has been a consistent scorer during their skid. He is averaging 12.6 points over his last five games, including a 15-point effort at Kennesaw State. Western Kentucky’s offense has struggled lately, failing to reach 70 points in three of its four recent losses.
The Blue Raiders counter with guard Sean Smith, who is coming off a season-high 19-point performance in the loss to Liberty. Smith’s production has been variable, but his ability to create offense will be key for a Middle Tennessee team that has shown resilience, with a double-overtime win over Missouri State on Jan. 17.
The series has historically been competitive, adding stakes to this mid-season conference clash. Both squads have mirrored records, making this a pivotal game for positioning ahead of the league tournament.
Defensive intensity will likely dictate the tempo. Western Kentucky aims to break its streak by improving its perimeter defense after allowing opponents to shoot 47% from the field during the losing stretch. Middle Tennessee must protect home court after Thursday’s disappointing defensive outing where Liberty shot 54%.
Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Murfreesboro. The teams will meet again in Bowling Green on Feb. 14.
