Georgetown Upsets Butler on Road Behind Strong Second-Half Defense

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a performance defined by stifling defense and efficient offense, the Georgetown Hoyas authored a decisive road victory, defeating the Butler Bulldogs 77-64 in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game before a crowd of 7,755 at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The most important part of the game was Georgetown’s commanding second-half defensive stand, which transformed a narrow halftime lead into a comfortable victory. After leading by just four points at the break, 43-39, the Hoyas held Butler to a frigid 25 points in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs’ offensive rhythm disintegrated against persistent Georgetown pressure, managing to connect on only 6 of 21 attempts from three-point range for the game and posting a season-worst offensive rating of 96.2 points per 100 possessions. This defensive lockdown, paired with a steady, mistake-free offensive approach, allowed Georgetown to steadily pull away and silence the home crowd.

Georgetown established its intent early, weathering an initial Butler push to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Hoyas’ offensive execution was crisp, shooting 54.9 percent from the floor and an even 50 percent from beyond the arc. Their 122.9 offensive rating underscored an attack that maximized its opportunities, committing only nine turnovers.

The Hoyas were led by a dominant interior performance from Vincent Iwuchukwu. The 7-foot-1 center from Imo State, Nigeria, scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in 27 minutes, providing a reliable scoring touch around the basket and anchoring the paint defensively. He was complemented by the backcourt duo of KJ Lewis and Malik Mack. Lewis, a guard from El Paso, Texas, also scored 17 points, while Mack, from Oxon Hill, Maryland, orchestrated the offense with 14 points and a game-high six assists. Jeremiah Williams of Chicago contributed six assists off the bench, facilitating ball movement that led to easy looks.

Butler, which entered the game as a six-point favorite with a 78.2 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, struggled to find consistent offense outside of Jamie Kaiser. The guard from Burke, Virginia, led all scorers with 19 points. Finley Bizjack of Trophy Club, Texas, added 16 points, but the Bulldogs shot a dismal 33.3 percent overall from the field. Despite winning the rebounding battle, particularly on the offensive glass with 11 boards, and committing only six turnovers, Butler could not overcome its poor shooting night.

The game’s trajectory turned decisively in Georgetown’s favor early in the second half. After Butler closed to within two points, the Hoyas embarked on a 13-2 run, fueled by defensive stops and transition opportunities. A key sequence saw Iwuchukwu convert inside, followed by a steal from Lewis leading to a Jayden Fort jumper. The run was capped by another Iwuchukwu layup, pushing the Georgetown lead to 13 points and forcing a Butler timeout. The Bulldogs never recovered, as every attempted rally was met with a poised Georgetown response, often a timely three-pointer or a drive from Mack.

The victory improved Georgetown’s season record to 12-10 overall and marked its third win in the last four games, providing momentum as the conference schedule intensifies. Butler, which had won three of its previous four, fell to 13-9.

Georgetown next hosts Creighton on Wednesday, February 4. Butler looks to rebound on the road at Providence the same evening. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, February 18.
