Virginia at Boston College

NEWTON, Mass. (Interstat) — A surging Virginia team visits a struggling Boston College squad in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Silvio O. Conte Forum.

The Cavaliers (17-3, 7-2 ACC) arrive riding high after a dramatic 100-97 double-overtime road victory at Notre Dame on Tuesday. Virginia has won seven of its last eight games, with the lone loss a narrow 85-80 defeat to North Carolina.

Virginia is led by standout guard Thijs De Ridder, who is averaging 21.1 points over his last seven games. He erupted for 32 points in 33 minutes against the Fighting Irish. Backcourt mates Sam Lewis (21 points, 6 assists) and Chance Mallory (17 points) were also pivotal in the marathon win.

Boston College (9-11, 3-6) looks to halt a skid after losing four of its last five. The Eagles fell 68-64 at Notre Dame last Saturday. Guard Fred Payne has been a bright spot, scoring 20 or more points in four of the last six contests, including a 26-point, 6-assist effort in an overtime win over Syracuse on Jan. 17.

The matchup pits one of the ACC’s top offenses against one of its most generous defenses. Virginia leads the conference in scoring at 81.2 points per game, while Boston College ranks near the bottom, allowing 74.1 points per contest.

Historically, Virginia has dominated the series, winning 17 of the last 18 meetings. The Cavaliers defeated the Eagles 72-58 in their only meeting last season.

For Boston College, a home upset would provide a crucial resume boost and momentum before a daunting trip to Duke next Tuesday. Virginia aims to maintain its position atop the ACC standings before returning home to host Pittsburgh on Feb. 3.

Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 31.
