SMU at Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — A pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference clash awaits Saturday at the KFC Yum! Center as the Louisville Cardinals host the SMU Mustangs in a matchup of teams jockeying for postseason position.
Both squads enter with strong overall records, as SMU (15-5) holds a slight edge over Louisville (14-6). The Mustangs are riding a two-game winning streak, most recently edging Florida State 83-80 last Saturday behind 28 points from Jaron Pierre and a near double-double from standout guard BJ Edwards.
Edwards has been the engine for SMU, averaging 18.3 points, 5.4 assists and 4.9 rebounds over his last seven games. His versatility was on full display in a 91-79 win at Wake Forest on Jan. 20, where he posted 24 points and seven assists.
Louisville looks to rebound from a deflating 83-52 road loss at Duke on Monday. The Cardinals had won two straight prior to that defeat, including a dominant 100-59 victory at Pittsburgh. Guard Ryan Conwell has been a consistent scorer, averaging 19.3 points over his last six contests. He poured in 24 points in the rout of Pittsburgh and had 18 in the loss at Duke.
The Cardinals will need a sharper defensive effort after allowing Duke to shoot 54.7% from the field. Containing Edwards and Pierre, who combined for 47 points in SMU’s last outing, will be a primary focus.
This game marks the first of a home-and-home series between the new ACC rivals, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 17 in Dallas. The venue should provide an advantage for Louisville, which is 10-2 at home this season, with the only losses coming to Duke and Virginia.
SMU has proven capable on the road, with wins at Wake Forest and a narrow loss at Duke this month. The Mustangs’ offense, averaging 81.2 points per game, will test a Louisville defense that has been vulnerable against top competition.
Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 31, in downtown Louisville. The game will be a key benchmark for both teams as they navigate the heart of the ACC schedule.
