College of Charleston at Hofstra

Preview: College of Charleston at Hofstra in Key Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

STEWART MANOR, N.Y. (Interstat) — A pair of teams riding opposite momentum waves but holding identical records will clash Thursday night when the College of Charleston Cougars visit the Hofstra Pride in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game.

Both teams enter the Jan. 29 contest at the Mack Sports Complex with 13-8 overall records, but their recent paths diverge sharply. The visiting Cougars have won three straight, including an 80-70 victory over Elon on Saturday. Hofstra, meanwhile, looks to halt a four-game skid, its latest an 89-82 loss at William & Mary.

The matchup hinges on a compelling battle in the paint. Charleston’s surge has been powered by the dominant play of forward Christian Reeves. The standout is coming off a career performance, pouring in 29 points and grabbing 18 rebounds in the win over Elon. Over his last three games, Reeves is averaging 23.7 points and 10.0 rebounds.

Hofstra will counter with its own interior force in Victory Onuetu. The forward is a consistent rebounding presence, having secured 13 boards against William & Mary and averaging 7.4 rebounds over his last five contests. His defensive energy will be crucial in attempting to slow Reeves.

Charleston’s supporting cast has provided timely contributions. Colby Duggan added 17 points and five assists against Elon, and Martin Kalu chipped in 10 points. The Cougars have shown offensive firepower, scoring 80 or more points in four of their last five wins.

The Pride, struggling defensively during their losing streak by allowing an average of 83.3 points, will need more from their perimeter scorers. Biggie Patterson (16 points vs. William & Mary) and Joshua DeCady must provide efficient offense to complement Onuetu’s work inside.

This game marks the first of a regular-season series between the teams, who will meet again in Charleston on Feb. 12. With the tightly packed CAA standings, securing a home victory is paramount for Hofstra to reverse its fortunes, while Charleston aims to extend its winning run and solidify its conference positioning.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
